Richard A. Mattern, 91, of Walnutport, formerly of Emmaus, died May 19, 2017, at Palmerton Hospital. He was the husband of the late Ruth M. (Stosh) Mattern, who died in 2000. Born in Allentown, he was the son of the late Arthur A. and Mabel (Eastman) Mattern.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.

He was employed at the U.S. Postal Service for 35 years, retiring in 1980. He served as assistant postmaster in Allentown and director of finance at the Lehigh Valley facility.

He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Emmaus and was a former member of its council.

He is survived by a daughter, Cheryl A. Sullenberger and three grandsons. He was predeceased by a son, Scott K.

Services will be held 10:30 a.m. May 24 at the Bachman, Kulik & Reinsmith Funeral Home, 225 Elm St., Emmaus. A calling hour will be held 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. May 24 in the funeral home.
