Coplay: Legion plans Sunday program

Stanley W. Reinhard Jr. American Legion Post 426 will hold its annual Memorial Day program May 28.

The contingent, honor guard, rifle squad and auxiliary will begin the day attending special services at Trinity United Church of Christ.

The itinerary then has the legion going to Laurys Station for a ceremony at the village’s church cemetery. Back in the borough, the legion contingent will commemorate the fallen service personnel at a program and wreath laying at the Coplay Saengerbund veterans memorial. The event will continue at St. Peter Roman Catholic Church’s cemetery, St. John the Baptist Church’s cemetery, Stiles war memorial plaza, Coplay’s cemetery, Coplay war memorial plaza at Chestnut and Maple streets - where a wreath laying at the base of the monument will take place - and lastly to Coplay-Northampton Bridge, where a wreath will be tossed into the Lehigh River honoring Navy sailors who died at sea.

Post Commander Larry Gutleber said the final program will take place in front of the Post 426 quarters on South Second Street. The burst of shots will be fired by the rifle squad with the honor guard at attention.

Voter turnout at the borough’s two precincts was extremely light, a trend that has been developing over the past few years. The fact there were no contested races for council and mayor didn’t help in bringing residents to the polls.

Mayor Dean Molitoris, although not contested in the Democratic primary, did have several placards around town to make public his candidacy. Republicans fielded no candidates for local elective positions.

All the Democratic candidates were uncontested and swept into office virtually in the November balloting since the GOP fielded no candidates.

Phillips Armstrong, Whitehall Township Board of Commissioners president, running for Lehigh County executive on the Democrat ballot in the borough, received 185 votes in the two precincts. The vote tally for the candidates on the ballot in the borough are unofficial.

Charles Sodl, a candidate for borough council, led the vote count in the combined two precincts with 167 unofficial ballots, followed by council members Steve Burker, 166 ballots; Lou Bodish, 160 votes; and Carl Luckenbach, 149 ballots.

Molitoris recorded 176 votes in the two precincts - Commitment to Family & Community, Cherry Street, and St. John’s Lutheran Church, Third Street.
