Zephs beat PHS again

Whitehall unleashed some high energy against Parkland in the semifinals of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Boys Volleyball Championship, setting up a title match against Emmaus this week.

The Zephyrs defeated the Trojans in four sets Monday night, advancing to the finals where they’ll play the top seeded Green Hornets for the EPC crown.

They won 25-23, 25-23, 23-25 and 25-20 to knock the Trojans out of the playoffs. It was the second time in four days that the rivals squared off, with Whitehall winning Friday’s regular season clash in a thrilling five sets.

Monday’s victory was all about how they came out and attacked their opponent, making sure they were communicating and playing crisp volleyball.

“The energy was definitely a factor for us,” said head coach George Cowitch.

Cowitch also said that they made some line-up changes and that also factored into their ability to win in four sets.

“That was a big help,” said Cowitch.

Cowitch said that in the first two sets they were in control most of the way leading to the commanding 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series. In the third set, he said that they played their best game statistically, hitting the ball at a .500 clip, but lost it down the stretch on some errors.

They regrouped in that fourth set as they regained that energy and took control from the outset to win the match. Once they regained that focus, Cowitch said they just started to bring it.

“We just never looked back from that,” he said.

Logan McGinley finished the game with 24 kills, four block and 20 digs. Nick Herman had 10 kills and two blocks, while Joseph Herman had nine kills and three blocks. Ethan Parvel also had a good game as he delivered nine kills and three blocks, while Kyle Sayre had 16 digs. Joey Maamari finished the game with 50 assists, 11 digs and four aces.

With the Zephyrs in the finals against the Green Hornets, a team that defeated them in four sets in April, the key will be to stay under control and not beat themselves. He knows Emmaus is a good team, one of the best in the state, and they just need to play sound volleyball.

“I told the guys, let’s just play our game and see what happens,” said Cowitch.

He believes that the longer the match goes, the better it is for his squad since they’re one of the best conditioned teams in the area.

Emmaus’ service game played a big role in their win back in April. Many of the Hornets utilize a jump serve that arrives deep on their side and with a lot of pace. Cowitch said that they spent time in practice trying to simulate that with two assistant coaches who can jump serve. If they can receive the ball and still set up their offense, they will aid them in their quest for a championship.

Still, Cowitch stressed that it’s important that guys “play their game.”

“We’ll just go and do what we do,” said Cowitch.
