Rohn, Lim advance to D-11 quarterfinals

The Whitehall boys tennis team continues to chart new territory in this postseason.

Jeremy Lim and Nick Rohn advanced to the quarterfinals of the District XI 3A Boys Doubles Championships. They arrived at the match, which is scheduled for last Wednesday afternoon at Parkland, by winning two matches in the opening rounds of the tourney.

That duo wasn’t alone in winning a first-round match. Nick Demjan and Erik Poon, the Zephyrs other entry, also won their first round match. They defeated Freedom’s Abdul Kutbuddin and Matthew Mullen, 5-7, 6-3, 10-7.

Lim and Rohn defeated Bangor’s Shane O’Leary and Sean Scholes in straight sets in the opening round (6-1, 6-0), setting up a second-round match against Freedom’s Jon Fiorentino and Justin Szaro. They blazed their way to victory 6-0, 6-1, another straight set win.

That put them in the quarters against Liberty’s David Lynn and Luke Conrad, but it was Lynn and Conrad who would advance all the way to the finals before falling to teammates Dan Lynn and Louis Gruber.

Liberty is fresh off an Eastern Pennsylvania Conference team championship after posting an undefeated season. The Hurricanes rode that wave to a team district title as well.

Head coach Austin Berg thought his duo has the right stuff to make it to the finals, before ultimately falling 6-2, 6-4.

“With how well they’re playing, with Nick’s serve, and Jeremy’s a lefthander, and he’s a righty, so it works out well,” said Berg.

Berg said Lim and Rohn haven’t played a doubles match all season. That was one of the reasons they didn’t get a higher seed when the tourney began. Berg said that all three of his singles players are strong, and would have posed a formidable matchup against the top three from any other team in the league.

Rohn said that their chemistry together stems from having similar games. That similarity differs slightly in how they attack the ball.

“I have more of a bigger game, and he has more of a placement game,” said Rohn. “So really with his placement, and with me working up at the front, it helps him hit it where he wants, and forces them [the opposition] to make mistakes. I can put the ball away easily after that.”

Rohn was practicing those slams at their home court on Tuesday afternoon. His teammates would feed him the ball up close and Rohn would mash them into the concrete for an unreturnable point.

Berg said that although it’s a new pairing they meshed really well in the tournament.

“I feel they’re able to make quick points, faster than the other teams will be able to,” said Berg.

Poon and Demjan’s tournament ended in the second round when they were upended by Parkland’s Aneesh Kapoor and Alex Son, 1-6, 3-6. Berg said that they played well, probably even better than they did in their victory over the Slaters duo, but couldn’t advance against the Trojan combo.

Still, the Zephyrs won three matches in the D-11 doubles tourney, another milestone during Berg’s tenure.
