Coplay streets will receive an annual spring cleaning. A private contractor will be in town May 17 and 18. There will be signs posted ahead of the dates advising the public that all vehicles must be removed from the streets that day.

Police will ticket any vehicles not heeding to the message.

On May 17, Front, Third, Fifth, Seventh, Ninth, 13th, Cherry, Maple, Chestnut, Oak, Keefer, Poplar, Center, Bridge and Hokendauqua streets and Center Circle will get a good scrubbing from winter’s travails.

On May 18, the sweeper will be on Second, Fourth, Sixth, Eighth, 10th, 12th, Wall, Lehigh, Ruch and Coplay streets, Schreiber Avenue, Saylor Drive and Saylor Circle in Echo Manor, Magna Drive, Magna Circle and Margaret, Barbara, Catherine, Bernice and Tapler drives in Parkway West.

Reminder: Borough public works personnel are now in full mode on Fridays picking up yard waste and grass. Residents should not have their lawn mowers blow the cut grass onto streets.

There will be a free tire drop-off event May 20, a program held once every year. The drop-off site returns to the Coplay Parkway lower lot, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Last year, it was at the bottom of Bridge Street on the former General Supply property the borough acquired.

Lafarge Cement, Cementon, will again provide a trailer for the discarded tires. Borough employees will assist residents bringing the tires for disposal.

Tires from cars, SUVs, pickup trucks and vans will be accepted. Tires from large trucks, motorcycles, ATVs and bicycles will not be accepted.

Six tires per household is the limit.

A proof of borough residency is required.

A reminder for people who choose to leave the tires on their properties outdoors: There is a borough ordinance prohibiting accumulation of used tires on private properties. Leaving tires out in this manner could contribute to the West Nile virus because standing water attracts mosquitoes.
