LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Track falls to PHS

Whitehall’s track and field season wrapped up with their annual meet against Parkland, a team that’s been a thorn in their side ever since head coach James Sebesta took over the program.

Monday was no different as the Trojan boys won 97-53, while the Parkland girls defeated their counterparts, 102-48. In the 13 years since Sebesta has been at the helm, they’ve never defeated the Trojans.

The boys finished the year 4-6; the girls were 6-4.

Even though it was another loss to their Eastern Pennsylvania Conference rivals, Sebesta said that this season was highlighted by their ability to progress with every meet.

“Overall, I think the kids improved every meet,” said Sebesta. “There were a lot of personal bests every week.”

When they make those strides every week, that underscores how successful it’s been this year.

Sebesta also said that a lot of the younger athletes stepped up, and that’s what defined the 2017 track season.

That list was numerous, and some of those younger kids made a mark in the final meet, including Ques Clark who won the shot put with a 29-00 toss, and was second in the discus; Devon Roberts who was third in the 1,600 and second in the 3,200 at 12:57.7; Savanah Rivera who was tops in the pole vault at 8-9; Kate Bonshak who was part of the winning 4x400 relay team with Amanda Crooks, Kylee Cunningham and Sarah Jones, and took a share of first in the 100 meters at 12.8; Angel Bacon who was first in the 200 meter dash at 27.8; Aliyah Barkley who was second in the 200, and Logan Miller who was second in the javelin at 103-09.

Additionally, Hope Millets, Elizabeth Rosario, Kristin Laky, Madelyn Mertz, Cheyenne Shook, and Jones have been part of that youth movement as well.

Senior Kylee Cunningham was first in the long jump with a 16-2 mark, while Kassidy Cunningham was third in the 800 at 2:31.3.

The boys also benefitted by their stable of young runners and throwers, including Martin Labib, who was first in the 200 at 22.9; Henri Toussaint who took top honors in the 110 hurdles with a 16.3 mark; Zahir Linton who was third in the 400; Lucas Souders who was second in the javelin at 160-01, and Julio Diaz who was second in the shot with a 37-06 toss.

That list of young male performers who’ve made an impact include Caleb Staub, Kresstoph Whittick, Jerome Wah, Michael Bogucki, and Chad Hussett.

The Zephs were able to get a number of firsts against the Trojans. Jackson Buskirk won the javelin with a 172-04 mark; Tyler Myers was tops in the discus at 136-07; Tavion George won the long jump at 19-02.50, and was third in the triple jump; Angel Falcon was first in the high jump at 5-7, and Gavin Wood won the pole vault with a 12-9 mark.

The 4x400 team also won as Adrian Anatolia, Andrew Hawk, Dez Boykin and Wah combined for a 3:39.5 mark.

Sebesta said that Crooks has been nursing a sore hamstring and her participation in the final meet was limited. He’s hopeful that Crooks, one of the top sprinters in the state, will be ready when the league championships get underway next Tuesday.
