Track defeats Eagles

The Whitehall track and field team celebrated senior night with a convincing win over visiting Nazareth, giving them some momentum as the regular season winds down on Monday.

The girls scored points in every event, winning 90-60, while the boys tallied points in everything but the distance races for the 88-62 win. The victory over the Blue Eagles lifts the girls record to 5-4, while the boys are now 4-5.

It was a nice send off for a strong senior class who will begin to prepare for the upcoming postseason. They include girls Nicole Bassa, Zena Burro, Kylee Cunningham, Laura Do, Hayley Fenstermaker, Cassidy Larkin, Jenine Levano, Brianna Parker, Crystal Ray, Tamara Riddick, Kaylee Stauffer, Alysa Tran and Maria Tran.

Senior boys include Kevon Allen, Adrian Anatalio, Carson Biel, Jackson Buskirk, Joshua Creasman, Angel Falcon, Tavion George, Eric Johnson, Ryan Klaugh, Fadi Mallouhi, Tyler Myers, Michael James Miller, Samuel Rappaport, Roy Reeves, Jordan Rivera, Jacob Snyder, Alec Sodl, Henri Toussaint, Kevin Vuong and Gavin Wood.

Another one of those seniors who helped put points on the board was Andrew Hawk. Hawk was part of two winning relay teams. He ran the anchor leg of the 4x800, and the second leg of the 4x400. He also competed in the 800 meters, finishing second in 2:11.60.

The senior also competed in the 92nd annual Jack Roddick Invitational at Shippensburg University. In the April 22 meet which brings together some of the top track and field athletes in the state, Hawk finished 22nd in the 800 meter dash, crossing the line in 2:03.29.

Hawk, who’s been a member of the track team since his freshman season, had to quickly prepare for the 4x400 after participating in the athlete/parent introductions during senior night. They sizzled to a 3:43.60 victory, giving the senior another relay win this season.

As his final year winds down (meets against Allen and Parkland remain), Hawk has put a lot of work into scrubbing seconds off his 800. Head coach James Sebesta said that he’s got to get down close to two minutes. Sebesta said that’s he’s had two strong races, and that should help build his confidence as the postseason gets underway in a couple of weeks.

“He knows what he has to do,” said Sebesta.

Sebesta said that Hawk has watched Calvin Schneck and Gabe Lamm become prominent figures in Whitehall track and that’s rubbed off on him.

“He wants to be that guy,” said Sebesta. “He’s willing to take on that role.”

Sebesta believes that Hawk is running with a lot of confidence right now. He said the focus will be to strengthen his kick and see if that can get him close to that 2:00 mark.

Hawk’s goal is to qualify for districts and make the league playoffs in the 800. He would also like to medal at districts and make it to states again, having previously made it as part of the 4x800 team his freshman year.

“It was a great learning experience, and I just want to get there on my own my senior year,” said Hawk.

With his Whitehall athletic career winding down, Monday’s meet honoring the senior class will be one he remembers.

“It really means a lot,” said Hawk. “We’ve had better teams, but this team, all of us seniors together, we’ve ben together a long time, and it’s just nice to be here on our home track with the whole team.”

Hawk said that he’s proud to be part of a senior class that put their hearts out there on the track.

Another senior who played a big role was Wood. He knew that Nazareth’s Ryan Fox would present a challenge in the pole vault, and he answered that winning in attempts at 12-9.

Tyler Myers and Jackson Buskirk also came through with big performances against the Blue Eagles with Myers winning the discus with a 149-05 throw, while Buskirk was tops in the javelin with a 159-10 toss.

Sebesta said that both seniors are right where they should be at this time of the year. They’re starting to creep close to their personal records and he hopes with warmer weather ahead, they’ll be able to do that.

Julio Diaz won the shot with a 38-08.50 mark, while senior George was tops in the triple jump with a 38-06.50 leap.

Seniors Falcon and Johnson were second and third, respectively, in the high jump, both clearing 5-9.

Zahir Linton was first in the 400 meters at 54.20, while Martin Labib was second in the 200 with a 23.40 mark.

The Zephs swept the 100 as Chad Hussett, Labib and Kresstoph Whittick, finished first, second, third, respectively.

For the girls, Ques Clark won the discus (70-05), while Logan Miller was first in the javelin (107-04). They also swept the shot as Cameryn Evans had the best throw at 28-06.

Madelyn Mertz won both hurdle events, finishing the 100 in 18.20 and the 300 in 51.30.

Devon Roberts also scored a double victory, winning the mile in 6:08.70 and the 3,200 in 12:44.40.

Emily Wells won the 400 in 1:07.50, while Angel Bacon was second in the 200 and third in the 100.

Sebesta said that he was happy with their performances against a tough opponent. Both the upperclassmen and the younger athletes really shined, he said.

“I was happy with what they got done,” he said.
