NHS in position to make EPC run
Northampton’s volleyball team is on the verge of clinching a district playoff berth if the K-Kids can take care of business this week.
Northampton lost their match on Monday to Whitehall (11-0) in a three-game sweep 17-25, 14-25, 11-25 to end a three-game win streak and knock their season mark down to 6-4.
However, with contests against Pocono Mountain East (1-11) and Allen (2-9) on tap this week, the Kids should be in favorable position to walk away with a pair of sweeps that would clinch a district berth.
Still, head coach Dave Faust is always looking for more from this team.
“We had a real shot at being 5-1 or even 6-0 to start the year,” said Faust. “We played an awesome match against Emmaus and then made too many mental mistakes against Liberty and Parkland. What we need to focus on is playing at a high level consistently. We need to mature mentally and put the team first.”
The Kids registered a trio of sweeps against Bethlehem Catholic, Dieruff and Easton before falling to the undefeated Zephyrs on Monday.
Three of their four losses this season have come against the EPC elite, losing to Emmaus (10-0) and Parkland (8-1), as well as a hiccup to Liberty earlier this season.
With Northampton battling with mid-tier teams to climb the conference ladder, the final two weeks of the season will be important, as they face Emmaus, Freedom (9-5), Liberty (7-4) and Nazareth (8-3) to close out the season.
The race for fourth place in the conference, and the final spot in the EPC playoffs, will ultimately be decided by the aforementioned group, outside of Emmaus. That’s why every match from here on out has major implications if the Kids are hoping to add another feather in their cap by qualifying for the EPC tournament.
“These next couple weeks are very important,” Faust said. “We have a stretch of teams that are having relatively good seasons, but are beatable, only if we play well.
“We aren’t taking anyone for granted. Just like us, they have their goals and I’m certain making EPC and district playoffs are among them.”
