The Rev. Joan G. Spangler, First Presbyterian Church member
The Rev. Joan G. Spangler, 71, of Bethlehem, died April 1, 2017, at home. She was a daughter of William Brudereck of Wyomissing and the late Evelyn Grier Brudereck. She was the wife of Donald Spangler for 49 years.
She was a Governor Mifflin High School graduate. She earned a bachelor’s degree in secondary education from Shippensburg University, and a master’s degree in Theological Studies and a master of divinity from Palmer Seminary of Eastern University.
She worked for 25 years in the youth services department of the Bethlehem Area Public Library until she retired in 2010. She was an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA). She was a pastor of the First United Methodist Presbyterian Church, Ashland.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Bethlehem, where she was a deacon and elder and was on the church’s pastoral care team. She was in youth ministry and in mission, both in the U.S. and in Africa, Asia, South America, Central America and the South Pacific.
She was a volunteer Girl Scout leader and a co-director of a summer camp at Brainerd Presbyterian Center.
In addition to her husband and father, she is survived by two daughters, Jodi and her husband Ken Wycherley and Amy and her husband William Dillman, all of Bethlehem; a son Mark and his wife Carline of Conshohocken; a brother, Arthur and his wife Carol of Sinking Spring; a sister, Jeri and her husband Nick Piccolo of Alma, Mich.; an aunt, Betty Lashbrook of Seattle; seven grandchildren, Alison, Ryan, and Colin Wycherley; Nathan Levy; and Max Dillman, all of Bethlehem; and Julien and Willow Spangler of Conshohocken; nine cousins; and seven nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two uncles; and one aunt.
Contributions may be made to mission scholarships for youth and adults at First Presbyterian Church, Bethlehem; and/or Lustgarten Foundation for pancreatic cancer research.
