Dieruff ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’

“Jesus Christ Superstar” comes to the stage at Dieruff High School at 7 p.m. April 27, 28 and 2 p.m. April 29, auditorium, Dieruff High School, 815 N. Irving St., Allentown.

The Gospel-themed rock opera, with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice, opened on Broadway in 1971. Loosely based on the Biblical narrative of the arrival of Jesus and his disciples in Jerusalem, the anachronistic musical ends with Christ’s crucifixion. Much of the plot focuses on Judas Iscariot, with ironic allusions to contemporary life and political events.

Sarah Pastelyak produces and directs the sold-out Dieruff High School production. She is assisted by vocal director Dr. Jennifer Dodd, choreographer Joanellyn Schubert, and stage manager Deborah Hamburger. Pastelyak is hopeful that the fire marshal will grant them permission to add folding chairs behind the last row for additional seating.

“Hosanna,” “Everything’s Alright,” “I Don’t Know How to Love Him,” “This Jesus Must Die,” and “Superstar” are among the featured songs.

The Broadway production was nominated for five Tony Awards in 1972. The 2000 Broadway revival received one Tony nomination and the 2012 Broadway revival garnered two Tony nominations.
