Dr. Mary D. Horkowitz
Dr. Mary D. Horkowitz, D.D.S., B.A., 92, died peacefully April 12, 2017, in Fort Myers, Fla. She was the wife of the late Dr. Simon A. Horkowitz who died in 1997. Born in Reynoldsville, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Mary (Dlugolecki) Dobosiewicz
She attended Academy High School in Erie, graduating in 1942, and sang in the nationally recognized Academy High School A Capella Choir. She graduated in 1946 from Mercyhurst College in Erie with a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology and chemistry. She graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dentistry with a doctor of dental science degree in 1952. She was the recipient of the Pennsylvania Dental Association Student Award in 1952 and the only woman in her graduating class with 95 men.
In 1953 she and her husband moved to Allentown where they started a practice in general dentistry at 947 N. 19th St. on the first floor of the townhouse where they lived upstairs. In 1961 their family moved to Emmaus. While raising her children, she taught oral pathology at Northampton County Area Community College in Northampton and then worked as a dental consultant for Aetna Life and Casualty in Allentown for 11 years, retiring in 1993.
Between the years of 1954 and 1993, she was a member of the American Dental Association, Pennsylvania Dental Association, Second District Dental Association, Lehigh Valley Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry, Pennsylvania Academy of General Dentistry, Lehigh Valley Dental Auxiliary, Lehigh County Dental Auxiliary, and the Allentown Hospital Continuing Education Committee. She served for two terms as president of the Lehigh County Dental Auxiliary and one term as secretary of the Lehigh County Dental Auxiliary.
She was a member of St. Ann Roman Catholic Church, Emmaus, where she was on the liturgy committee, was a lector, commentator, Confraternity of the Christian Doctrine teacher and a choir member for over 30 years. She was active in the Christian Family Study Group and in the Allentown Cursillo Movement for more than 20 years where she was a former Rectora of the Allentown Diocese Women’s Cursillo. She was a member of the Advisory Council of Professional Personnel to the Public Health Nursing Service of Lehigh County Inc. for 15 years and on the evaluation committee for five years. She was a member of the American Association of University Women, for 20 years and a board member of the Emmaus Public Library for 10 years.
She was a member of the Emmaus Garden Club where she was president for a few years and was a life member of the Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania and district Director, club president and life member of the National Council of State Garden Clubs.
In 2011 she moved to Fort Myers, Fla. and resided in an independent living facility.
She is survived by children, Mary Louise and her husband Dr. William Newman, of Riegelsville, Dr. John and his wife Dr. Kathleen O’Neill and their son, Alexander, of Houston, Texas and Dr. Carol and her husband Constantine Tsaoussis and their sons Simon, Nikolas and Christopher, of Miami, Fla.; nephews, Dr. Eugene Pantera and his wife Dr. Carole, of East Aurora, N.Y., and Dr. Stephen Dobosiewicz and children Sarah, Michael and Rachel, of Erie. She is predeceased by sisters, Dr. Helen Dobosiewicz and Dr. Sonia Pantera and her husband Dr. Eugene Pantera and their son Brian Pantera; brothers, Rev. Leon Dobosiewicz, Rev. Stephen Dobosiewicz and Thaddeus Dobosiewicz and his wife Harriet.

Visitation will be held 8:30 to 10:15 a.m. April 22 at the Bachman, Kulik & Reinsmith Funeral Home, 225 Elm St., Emmaus, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. at St. Ann Catholic Church, Emmaus.
