LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Whitehall track falls to Becahi, Liberty

Kassidy Cunningham runs in a relay race for the Zephs during a recent meet this season.

The Whitehall track and field team is still trying to find its footing as they head into the heart of their Eastern Pennsylvania Conference schedule.

Last week they had a tri-meet against Liberty and Bethlehem Catholic High schools. The boys were swept by the Hurricanes and Golden Hawks, while the girls managed to defeat Bethlehem Catholic, 77-73.

Head coach James Sebesta said that the effort was really good, but the boys were hurt by the absence of Andrew Hawk, who is a points machine in the 800 and relay races.

Still, he said there’s a lot to build on as they continue to march toward the postseason.

“I like their competitive spirit,” said Sebesta.

He was also encouraged by the performance of the girls, especially in some of the relay races.

“I thought the girls did a nice job,” he said.

For the boys, Sebesta said that sprinter Martin Labib “has come out of nowhere” to establish himself as the team’s top sprinter. His message is simple for his sprinter.

“I don’t know where it comes from, just keep it coming,” said Sebesta.

Sebesta believes that Labib is even surprising himself with his success.

In the meet against Liberty and Becahi, the Whitehall girls were strong in the sprints as Amanda Crooks won the 100 in 12.1, while Kate Bonshak was third at 12.8. The 200 featured Bonshak finishing second (27.1) and Helen Davis nabbing third at 28.3.

In the 400, Kassidy Cunningham crossed the line in 1:04.7, good for third place. She also finished third in the 800 with a 2:39 mark.

They also won the 4x100 relay as Crooks, Bonshak, Angel Bacon and Kylee Cunningham hit the tape in 50.8.

They were second in the 4x800 as Devon Roberts, Emily Wells, Sarah Jones and Kassidy Cunningham finished in 11:54.

In the distance races, Devon Roberts broke through in the 3,200 to take third, finishing in 13:19.1.

Aliyah Barkley was tops in the 100 hurdles, crossing the line in 18.0, beating teammate Madelyn Mertz, who also finished in 18.0. Mertz followed that with a second-place finish in the 300 hurdles, finishing in 51.5.

Hope Millets won the high jump at 4-7, while Savanah Rivera at 8-9, and Elizabeth Rosario was third at 8-0.

Finally, Kylee Cunningham was third in the long jump at 14-10.

Martin Labib was able to get second in both the 100 (11.1) and 200 (23.2) meter races against the ’Canes and Hawks.

Zahir Linton took top honors in the 400, winning in 55.1, while Jerome Wah was third at 56.5.

Caleb Staub was third in the 800 (2:16.7) as well as the mile (5:11.0), while Samuel Rappaport was second in the 3,200 at 12:31.0.

They also finished second in the 4x800 as Jacob Heffner, Rappaport, Muhammad Azim, and Alec Sold combined for a 9:52.1 mark.

In the high jump, Angel Falcon was tops, clearing the bar in 5-9, while Eric Johnson was third with a 5-7 leap.

Gavin Wood continued his consecutive win streak, taking home first in the pole vault with a 12-3 mark.

Another Zephyr whose win streak is still intact is Tyler Myers who won the discus with a 139-09 toss, while Jacob Snyder finished third at 110-03.

Finally, Jacob Buskirk finished second in the javelin with a 144-02 toss.
