Viola M. Wert

Viola M. Wert, 108, died peacefully April 3, 2017. Born on Feb. 11, 1909, in Lehighton, she was the daughter of the late Atty. Wilson A. and H. Clorinda (DeFrehn) Wert.

She lived most of her life in Lynnville on the family homestead.

A 1926 graduate of William Allen High School, she attended Shippensburg Normal School, earning her teaching certificate in 1928.

In 1943, she earned her Bachelor’s degree from Kutztown, and attained her Master’s degree and principal certification from Temple University in 1955, and qualified as an elementary supervisor.

She began her teaching career in Parkland School District in 1928 and became a teaching principal at Parkway Manor Elementary School, the first year it opened, and then became principal of Fogelsville and Cetronia elementary schools.

She retired in 1974 after 46 years.

A member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Honor Society, she was active in the Parkland and Emmaus garden clubs and was proud of her gladiolus and pressed flowers she made into notecards.

She was very involved in her church, first at Emmanuel United Church of Christ, Allentown, and then at St. Peter’s UCC, Lynnville.

At age 95, she wrote “A Village Called Lynnville,” about her life and the place that she called home.

She also was published in the former Sen. John Edwards’ book, “HOME the Blueprints of our Lives.”

Always providing a home to any stray cat, she leaves behind her beloved Snowball, BlueEye and Freckles.

Her survivors include nieces and nephews Carol Haverkamp, Jane Bachman (James), Catherine Heckman (Steven), Harold Burkhart, William Wert (Jelena), David Wert (Constance), and Joanne Wert (Allan); 12 great-nieces and nephews, and 15 great-great-nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by brothers Alfred and Edward; sisters Ilerda Wert and Margaret Burkhart; and niece MaryAnn Allender.
