Tennis keeps on winning

The wins keep piling up for the Whitehall boys tennis team.

Their latest victory came against Easton as they defeated the Red Rovers 5-2 last week.

That win puts them at 5-0 this season, matching last year’s start in the same number of games. They have a chance to extend that streak to 6-0 when they met Northampton on Monday, and they did just that with a 5-2 victory.

The highlight of their match against Easton happened at No. 1 singles. Berg said that it embodied everything anyone would want to see in a high school match, going three sets with two of them decided by tiebreakers.

“It was probably one of the most exciting matches I’ve ever seen,” said head coach Austin Berg. “You probably could have sold tickets to it.”

The match between Jeremy Lim and Leland Addison turned into a battle of attrition as both players had to withstand the emotional roller coaster of two tiebreakers in the second and third sets.

Lim lost the first set 2-6 and was trailing 1-4 in the second set when he turned things around, sending the set into a tiebreaker which he ultimately won 7-5, thus winning the set 7-6. Berg said that Lim was winning in the decisive third set, but this time Addison rallied, eventually coming back to defeat Lim, (2-7), 6-7.

Berg said that the final two sets were extremely close and that they could have gone either way.

Berg also said that Addison is one of the top singles players in the league and that Lim’s performance was an indication of how far the talented sophomore has come in his role as the team’s No. 1 player.

“I could not be more proud of his dedication and determination to fight,” said Berg.

The Zephs won the other two singles matches as Gavin Meyers defeated Ethan Gabay 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2, while Nick Rohn blanked Tyler Fitch in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.

Berg said that both Meyers and Rohn have been steamrolling most of their opponents to date, and he’s anxious to see how they fare against Nazareth later this week. They meet the Blue Eagles April 11. He said that will give him an indication where both players stand among their peers at the same position.

“That will be a nice test to see how well they do,” said Berg.

The Zephs also won a pro set at No. 1 doubles as Noah Zahradnik and Edward Harrich defeated Ryan Lukachek and Jake Cabreza, 8-1.

“That was a positive win for Noah and Edward,” said Berg.

The duo of Nick Demjan and Erik Poon keeps on racking up wins at No. 2 doubles. They earned their second win of the season. While they haven’t always been partners, both players have had success at the No. 2 slot, with Demjan vacating his doubles play for a No. 3 singles spot last week against Freedom. Together they posted a 6-4, 6-0 win over Dominic Viscomi and Evan Gerlach.

Berg said that Poon is out there controlling the court, knowing exactly what he has to do.

At No. 4 doubles, Trevor Giradi and Jeremy Snyder displayed that fight that Berg wants all his players to develop, winning in three sets over Preston Ryder and Michael DiGangi,7-6, 2-6, 6-4. he pair has consistently risen to the challenge throughout the season. They are now 4-0 on the year.

Berg said that he wants to see that same fight at No. 3 doubles, noting they “have a little work to do.” till, the team has equaled last year’s torrid start, with impressive wins against Freedom and Easton in that streak.

Against the Kids, all three singles matches were won by Whitehall. Jeremy Lim beat Dom Jackson 6-2, 6-3 at number-one and Gavin Meyers handed Andrew Hozza a 6-3, 6-2 loss at number-two. At number-three, it was Nick Rohn beating Brandon Peters 6-1, 6-2.

The Zephs got wins at two and three doubles. Nick Demjan and Eric Poon beat Lucas Foulke and Trevor Hanuschak 6-3, 6-0 at two and Aidan Gilboy and Daniel Lim beat Chris Nemeth and Jake Flood 6-2, 6-0 at three.
