Zephys show off at Relays
The Zephyr Relays turned into quite the showcase for the Whitehall boys as they won a number of events at this year’s installment of the annual early season meet.
The boys won four events, taking home first place in the 800 Sprint Medley, Pole Vault, Discus and Javelin. Those wins catapulted them into third place, finishing second to perennial powerhouses North Penn and Easton Area High Schools at the Zephyr Sports Complex last Saturday.
This year 11 teams competed at the Relays with North Penn claiming the top honor among the boys with a 118.25 mark. Easton was second at 81.25.
The boys were led by outstanding individual performances, as well as a combined effort in the 800. Gavin Wood was top dog in the pole vault as he cleared 11-9 for the win. Jackson Buskirk was king of the hill in the javelin with a 158-02 mark, while Tyler Meyers was first in the discus with a 134-04 toss.
The foursome of Andrew Hawk, Zahir Linton, Jerome Wah and Mekhi Lee combined to take the top honors in the 800 Sprint Medley, finishing in 1:41.3.
In addition to those wins, the 4x100 ‘A’ team finished fifth as Devin Castro, Alan Negrete, Ryan Klaugh and Dez Boykin combined for a 46.7 mark.
They were sixth in the 4x800 meter relay with Muhammed Azim, Samuel Rappaport, Adrian Anatalio and Caleb Staub combined for a 9:37.8 mark.
They also finished sixth in the 4x110 meter hurdle shuttle as Negrete, Christian Hudson, Kresstoph Whittick and Artur Santos crossed the line in 1:24.4.
In the long jump, Negrete (18-6) and Tavion George (18-4.50) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, while Jacob Snyder finished third in the discus with a 118-9 mark. Snyder was also fourth in the javelin with a 138-07 toss.
Head coach James Sebesta said that he was happy with the boys strong showing at the Relays. Every year he likes to give everyone an opportunity to race and compete at the Relays. He said they work hard setting up the different events and then must race as well. It makes for a long day, but they handle it with class.
“It’s a lot of rushing around, but they do a real good job,” said Sebesta. “they help out wherever they can.”
The girls finished sixth among the eleven-team field with 44.50 points.
The girls had two top three finishes. They were second in the 4x100 relay as Amanda Crooks, Angel Bacon, Kylee Cunningham and Kate Bonshak finished in 51.6.
They finished third in the 4x200 as Crooks, Helen Davis, Bacon and Bonshak crossed the line in 1:52.2.
They were seventh in the 4x100 Meter Shuttle Hurdle as Aliyah Barkley, Kristin Laky, Jukia Thomas and Madelyn Mertz combined for a 1:25.5 mark.
Logan Miller fourth in javelin with a 102-10 mark. Ques Clark was seventh in the shot put with a 27-08.50 toss.
Finally, Elizabeth Rosario and Savanah Rivera tied for sixth in the pole vault at 7-00.
Sebesta said that he’s looking for maximum effort every time they step on the track. They may not win every race or get points in every event, but all he wants to see is a strong effort.
