Volleyball team has senior leadership
With three wins under their belts, the Whitehall boys volleyball team is riding a wave of good fortune, and that begins with their senior leadership.
After sweeping Pocono Mountain West, their third sweep in as many games, the Zephyrs are once again making that steady climb into the upper echelon of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference.
Whitehall’s margin of victory over the Panthers in each set never dipped below 12 points, winning, 25-7, 25-13 and 25-11. They were dominant throughout the match, and head coach George Cowitch said that their success is deeply rooted in their senior leadership.
Cowitch said that with seven seniors on the rosters, the experience they bring to the court works to their advantage. Within those numbers, many of those seniors have been starting since their freshman seasons.
One of those seniors is Logan McGinley. McGinley, an outside hitter, had 10 kills against PMW to lead the team. Cowitch said that McGinley serves as their “go-to guy.”
“When we get in trouble, he’s our outlet,” said Cowitch. “He’s going to settle everything down where we move onto the next play.”
Another senior who shined against the Panthers was Nick Herman who thwapped seven kills.
Senior libero Kyle Sayre had 18 digs, another player whose court experience is a big bonus for the Zephs. Finally, senior setter Joey Maamari had 23 assists and four aces.
With such a veteran group, Cowitch said that they don’t often beat themselves and make unforced errors.
“We don’t make as many mistakes as we used to,” said Cowitch.
The Zephs also have several underclassmen who contribute as well. Sophomore Ethan Parvel also had a good all-around game against the Panthers. He had five kills, nine digs and two aces.
Cowitch said that this season they’ve been able to mix in a blend of younger players that’s also helped them getting out of the gate quickly. That includes middle hitter Joseph Herman and newcomer Devon Martinez.
“It’s really a great mixture,” he said.
It also helps that a lot of their players have had success in other sports, bringing that same drive and talent to the volleyball court.
“We have great athletes, a lot of them coming from football and basketball, and it shows right now,” said Cowitch.
The rest of the league is experiencing that athletic ability as well.
The Zephyrs will face Quakertown and Bethlehem Catholic High Schools this week.
