Roswell Jacob Ortt

Roswell “Rossy, The Barber” Jacob Ortt, 99, died March 15, 2017, at The Gardens Poplar Estates, Columbia, Tenn. He was the husband of Margaret “Peggy” Ortt. They were married 74 years. Born in Upper Milford Township, he was the son of the late Charles J. Ortt and the late Sadie F. “Shelly” Ortt.

He was a World War II veteran, serving in the Navy’s Naval Armed Guard from 1943 to 1945. He was a 2nd gunner’s mate on an escort ship that was part of the PQ18 convoy to Murmansk, Russia, served on a transport ship carrying troops to the Battle of Sicily and a transport ship carrying General Patton’s troops to Normandy for which he received France’s French Legion Medal of Honor.

He was the owner and operator of Rossy’s Barber Shop at the corner of Sixth and Ridge streets, Emmaus, for many years before moving to Lewisburg, Tenn., for a short time, Spring Hill, Fla., for many years and finally Columbia, Tenn.

He is survived by his wife; son, Bryant, of Billings, Mont.; daughter, Vivian Hardison, of Belfast, Tenn.; granddaughters, Michelle Rock, of San Jose, Calif., Bridgette Walsh, of Lewisburg, Jessica Bartling, of Cary, N.C.; grandson, Dan of Missoula, Mont.; great-grandchildren, Sarah and Jake Blasingim, Rylan and Aidan, Naomi and Matthew Rock, Paxton and Cooper Bartling; sister-in-law, Irene Lipositz; several nieces and nephews.
