LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Bats start off hot for Whitehall softball team

The Zephyr softball team is bashing the ball around the yard, transforming Whitehall into Hitsville, PA.

It could be argued that the softball looks as big as a beachball since they defeated Paramus Catholic to begin their season at Myrtle Beach.

They’ve collected 39 hits and 35 runs over three games, and with all that production at the plate, they’ve burst out of the gate unbeaten.

Their latest victory was a 13-3 demolition of North Pocono.

That win was highlighted by Mackenzie Guzy’s monster day at the dish. The senior catcher went 4-5 with a triple, two doubles, and four RBIs.

Head coach Alexis Berg-Townsend said that Guzy is seeing the ball well and is aggressive in the zone.

“She really has good hands to the ball right now,” said Berg-Townsend. “She’s really feeling it.”

The Zephyrs had 14 hits in the win, with Courtney Grim also making her presence felt at the plate. She was 3-4 with an RBI.

Berg-Townsend attributes their early success to their focus on removing a sour taste from their mouths, a remnant of last year’s district final. While they addressed that game during the preseason, she said it’s now behind them and they’re concentrating on the challenges ahead. She said they have a lot to prove and everyone is ready to compete and be at the top of their games.

While that covers the mental outlook, Berg-Townsend said that their desire to be one of the best teams in the league begins with their preparation.

“There’s not a practice we have where they’re not giving 100 percent,” said Berg-Townsend. “They come in and get in the work we need to get done. I have 14 girls who want to be there.”

Ashlee Brosky got the win, allowing just six hits over seven innings. The senior also struck out nine Trojans over that span.

“She really threw a good game,” said Berg-Townsend.

With their dominance to begin the season, Berg-Townsend knows that their schedule still has plenty of tough teams that will present challenges. That list includes Nazareth, Easton, Northampton and Parkland. She said that each player will bring their own motivation to each of those games, and whether it’s fueled by last year’s disappointment is up to each individual.

But this team wants to forge their own identity. 2016 is in the past and the 2017 squad wants to write their own history, said Berg-Townsend.

“They want to see what they can accomplish on their own,” said Berg-Townsend.

In last week’s win against Allentown Central Catholic, Rachel Arner went 3-4 with two RBIs, two stolen bases, and three runs scored. Brosky was 2-3 with a triple, three RBIs and a run scored.
