Becahi Notes-‘Oklahoma’ April 7, 8 By Elizabeth Nemec
After some late snowstorms brought welcoming days off from school, Bethlehem Catholic HS has finally adopted the distinctive scent of spring. With this subtle change comes fresh air, and a new perspective on the last two months of the school year.
Jan. 29-Feb. 4 Becahi celebrated Catholic Schools Week with themed outfits, pep rallies and a new event, called the “Great Golden Hawk Trivia Challenge,” where students were pitted against teachers in lighthearted rivalry. A Tasting Fair also took place, where clubs ran their own booths and sold delicious homemade foods. Fan favorites included quiches sold by the French Club, peach cobbler offered by Student Council and noodles prepared by the International Club.
The Becahi community is incredibly proud of the dedicated girls basketball team, who won the PIAA State Championship against Villa Maria Academy March 23, 46-27. This was Becahi’s first state title for girls basketball. The team also racked up other titles, such as EPC champions, District champions, and they boasted a school record of 30 wins. In a school assembly March 29, captains Tessa Zamolyi and Neila Luma (seniors), along with their coach, Jose Medina, thanked the school for their support. There could not be a more deserving group of girls, who are known for their humility, resilience, and talent, both on and off the court.
The boys’ basketball team also brought home a District championship title. The competitive cheer team successfully made it to the Nationals Competition in Walt Disney World. The swim team, a small but mighty force, took home many medals at the District swim championship. Jill Spirk (senior), Joe Bozzi (junior), and Marisa Linsky (junior) all earned medals.
The wrestling team is chock full of champions as well. Ryan Zeiner, Niko Camacho, and Mikey Labriola (seniors) are all regional champions. Camacho and Labriola are District Champions. Labriola is now a two-time state champion as well.
One of Becahi’s most treasured events, Mini-Thon, began on the night of March 3. Hundreds of Becahi students took the dance floor to partake in this charity event, where students are required to stay on their feet and dance for 12 hours straight. Thanks to outstanding leadership by the committee, eager participation by the dancers, and the unwavering support of the community, Becahi raised $67,335 for the Four Diamonds Fund, an organization devoted to fighting pediatric cancer.
Becahi’s Theater Department put on the first performances of its spring musical, “Oklahoma.” The show, which played March 31, April 1, and April 2, was a sensation. If you want to see Lauren Schuster (Laurey), Liam Nixon (Curly), Kevin Michels (Will), and Dorothy Brill (Ado Annie) in action, Becahi invites you to come and see the last performances April 7 and April 8 at 7 p.m.
The baseball team is getting fired up for its season, and is hoping to make it to the postseason. The team is stacked with outfielders Nate Gehringer, AJ Abate, Aiden Henninger and pitcher Matt Morrow (all seniors). The softball team plans on working hard and repeating the state championship they won in 2015. Luckily, they still have many players from that winning team, including Maddie Ensley (senior), Julia Sledz (junior), Alexa Panuccio (junior), and Natasha Miner (junior). In boys lacrosse, the team is hopeful for a successful season, vying for a spot at the district playoffs this year. Key players include Liam Foley, Colin Redington, Mike Barattini, and Liam McGregor (all seniors).
Lastly, don’t forget to mark your calendars for the upcoming spring concert May 19 at 7 p.m. featuring Becahi’s concert band.
