Patricia and Joseph Sommer of Coplay celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Feb. 16.

The couple was married in 1957 by the Rev. John Weisler at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, Coplay.

Patricia, a daughter of the late Frank and Bertha Betz, who resided in Coplay, is active at St. John the Baptist, Stiles, where she’s a member.

Joseph is the son of the late Frank and Josephine Sommer, who also resided in Coplay.

He served in the Navy aboard the USS Helena. He worked for Keystone Cement, retiring in 1992 after 38 years.

A surprise party, attended by friends and family, was held Feb. 12 at West Coplay Maennerchor, Stiles.

The event included a luncheon, video presentation and surprise guest appearance by the Penn State Nittany Lion.

The couple has six children: Joseph, and his wife, Jean, of Whitehall; Jeffrey, and his wife, Janice, of Whitehall; Sandra Lee Knecht, and her husband, Randy, of Nazareth; Chris, and his wife, Christine, of Coplay; Charlotte Minnich, and her husband, Tim, of Walnutport, and Tim, and his wife, Sara, of Whitehall.

They have 13 grandchildren: Kristin; Jessica, wife of Angelo Jordan; Zachary; Gabrielle; Matthew; Jillian; Rachel; Hannah; Nick; Seth; Justin; Katelyn, and Elijah.
