David B. Teufel
David B. Teufel, 49, formerly of Emmaus, died in Portland, Maine, after a brief illness. He was the son of Robert and Anne Teufel, of Emmaus.
He attended Emmaus High School and graduated from Blair Academy in 1987 where he played varsity football and was elected to the Blue and White Key Society. He graduated from Lehigh University, Class of 1991, with a degree in journalism. He was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa. When he wrote his class profile in Lincoln School’s first grade he stated he wanted to be a journalist and loved telling stories and reading books.
He got his career start when he was 10 years old by selling a fishing tip to Outdoor Life magazine which published it and sent him a check for $10. After Lehigh, he joined L.L.Bean in Freeport, Maine, as a copy writer of their hunting and fishing catalogs later moving up to corporate public relations where he did segments with Martha Stewart, was interviewed on-air by Don Imus and delighted in getting Bean products favorably reviewed in national media. While he enjoyed his Bean career, he was lured to Littleton, Colo., by Orion to develop and produce outdoor videos; many of his shows are still running on the Outdoor Channel. After leaving Orion he co-founded High Pines Creative Group specializing in public relations and trade show exhibits chiefly for the outdoor industry.
He was an ardent outdoors man and an expert fly caster and archer with a flair for adventure. He used a college graduation gift from his grandmother to underwrite an expedition to Russia’s Kola Peninsula sleeping in Russian helicopters while fly fishing for Atlantic salmon, being among the first Americans to fish several newly opened Soviet rivers.
He is survived by his parents; sister, Laura and her husband Kevin Michaelis, of Macungie; brother, Edward J., M.D. and his wife Emily, of Falmouth, Maine; two children, William and Marina and his former wife Margery with whom he remained close friends; nephews; nieces; cousins and friends.
Contributions may be made in his memory to the Emmaus Public Library, 11 E. Main St., Emmaus, 18049.
