Swimmers reflect on their season

On paper, Whitehall’s swim teams may not have registered several top finishes at the PIAA District 11 swimming championships.

The Zephyrs didn’t qualify a swimmer for the upcoming state meet at Bucknell University.

But the Zephyrs had outstanding overall performances for their boys’ and girls’ units. They both shattered a good amount of previous individual and relay records.

The boys’ team finished eighth from the 15-team field, while the girls’ were ninth overall.

“We did very, very well,” said head coach Pete Rile. “We had some phenomenal performances across the board. Even though we didn’t have a swimmer qualify for states, we had a good meet.

“Our kids were able to set a number of personal bests and significantly lower their times. They improved their times in 14 of 19 opportunities and that’s very good.”

Dan Jablonski was the top male finisher in individual performances as he was fourth in the 500 free and sixth in the 200 free. Jablonski was part of five record-shattering showings, as he was a member of the 200 and 400 relay teams as well as setting a new mark in the 100 free, a portion of the 500 free.

Stephanie Setar was the top female individual finisher as she was third in the 100 free and fifth in the 100 back.

“The boys were hoping to set seven new school records and they got all of them,” added Rile. “That was the best we ever had from a boys team. The girls set 11 new personal bests and that was a good day for them.”

The Zephyrs will graduate two girls and three boys from their current unit, and a strong nucleus is expected to return. Trish Bartosh and Hope Millets, both of whom were injured all season, will also return to the mix next season.

Yet, Rile knows his boys team will take a hit due to their recurring low numbers.

“With the boys, it hurts,” said Rile. “It is 25 percent of the team. It continues to be a number game with the boys and we’re hoping to change that. We will get some good swimmers back.”

Rile sees the league returning most of their swimmers next year, and he realizes his team will need to reach its potential.

“We do have a number of younger swimmers who will be back and they made some strides this year,” said Rile. “But the swimmers coming back will need to step it up and we’ll need to get the most we can from everybody.”
