Catasauqua’s wrestling program continued its stellar season with an impressive showing at the recent PIAA District 11 Class 2A individual wrestling championships at Freedom and Liberty High Schools.

Fortunately for the Roughies, the show will continue.

Seniors Ryan Greene, Ben Nosal and Tyler Youssef will all advance to the PIAA Class 2A Southeastern Regional at Wilson West Lawn High School this weekend.

Greene entered as the third seed in the 145-pound bracket. He recorded a pair of falls in less than 40 seconds apiece before he was eventually stopped in the finals by runner-up Jason Jones of Saucon Valley, 4-2 in the semifinals.

Nosal began the tournament as the second seed in the 220-pound bracket. He recorded a pair of pins and a decision before he was the victim of a fall from Devon Fontanez of Saucon Valley.

Youssef was the third seed in the 195-pound bracket. He had a first-round bye and then recorded a fall and decision. His night also ended in the finals with a tough, 8-5 loss to Brady Mickatavage of North Schuylkill.

“The kids that Youssef and Nosal wrestled are both top-rated in their weight classes,” said Roughies head coach Kyle Rusnock. “I was really impressed with Tyler’s performance. He is not afraid of anybody.

“He probably got more points on his guy than anyone has in a while. Tyler has him on the ropes and he was right there until the end.

“Ben (Nosal) also was going against one of the top kids in the state. (Fontanez) pinned him once before, but (Nosal) certainly was up for the challenge. Greene also had an awesome tournament for us.”

Along from their three placewinners, Tyler Melendez (120) took a fifth, and the Roughies had 10 overall wrestlers advance past the first round.

Catty finished seventh as a team with 86 points in the 20-team field.

“I thought we wrestled well overall,” said Rusnock. “I am very proud of what we were able to accomplish. To have 10 wrestlers get past the first round is very impressive.

“It is also impressive to see us finish in the top 10 among teams.”

Rusnock believes his three grapplers will have a good chance to gain a state berth this weekend.

Greene (28-7) will meet Dylan Jackson of Pequea Valley (28-12), the seventh seed in district three; Nosal (24-5) will meet Joe Coblentz (25-11), the seventh seed from district three; and Youssef (22-5) will meet Zack Ruttner (25-6) the seventh seed from district three.

“I think they all have a good shot,” said Rusnock. “They will be ready for anything.”
