Whitehall library: Knitting Guild will meet at library

The Knitting Guild will meet 6 p.m. the first and third Thursday of each month. This group is open to anyone who knits, sews, crochets or does any type of needle work. Come in and join us!

The Friends of the Library group will meet 10 a.m. the second Friday of each month, except in December.

The FOL group sponsors a $500 scholarship for a Whitehall High School senior each year. The application is due March 31 and can be found on the library website, at the circulation desk or from the school’s guidance office.

The FOL has an ongoing book sale to raise money to support library programs and, this year, will purchase new computers for the public area.

Our family storytime and craft time on Wednesday nights will be held 7 p.m. March 8, 15, 22 and 29 and April 5, 19 and 26. There is no meeting April 12 because of National Library Week.

The program, for children of all ages, will be held in the community room and lasts about 35 to 40 minutes.

Join us 7 p.m. March 16 for a special program called “Everything You Know About Fairy Tales Is Wrong!” This program is presented by local author and illustrator Christopher D. Ochs. Ochs will talk about archetypal figures in fairy tales, like the damsel in distress, knight in shining armor, evil stepmother and others.

In 2014, he made his literary debut with the epic fantasy novel “Pindlebryth of Lenland: The Five Artifacts.” He has had several short stories published since then, and his latest work, a collection of mirthful macabre short stories called “If I Can’t Sleep, You Can’t Sleep,” came out in October 2016.

His books will be available for purchase following the talk.

You still have time to sign up for our adult winter reading program that runs until March 25. Stop by the front desk to register and get your pen, bookmark and 2017 calendar or visit our website.

The theme this year will be “Reading in Paradise.” There will be extra points for completing the game board and for reading books that have keywords dealing with the theme “Paradise.” Keep track of all the books you read or listen to and win prizes!

The wrap-up party will be 1 p.m. and/or 6 p.m. March 27.

See the handout at the desk or call the library for more information.

Join us on Earth Day this year for the dedication of our new Okame cherry tree, which was given to us last fall by the Whitehall Beautification and Garden Club.

The event will be held 11 a.m. April 22.
