Dale E. Newhart
Dale E. Newhart, 91, of Bethlehem and formerly of Treichlers, died Feb. 17, 2017, at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Muhlenberg Campus, Bethlehem. He was the husband of the late Phoebe Lillian (Simpson) Newhart for 53 years.
Born in Treichlers, he was a son of the late Elvin G. and Stella M. (Bossard) Newhart.
He was a 1943 graduate of Northampton High School. He earned a degree in business administration from Muhlenberg College in 1949.
He was in the Army Air Corps during World War II at Johnston Island as a radio-telephone operator.
He worked for more than 39 years in accounting and business administration at Allentown State Hospital, of which he became a superintendent. He was a vice president of administration for seven years at The Lutheran Home at Topton.
He was instrumental in the formation of Hope Lutheran Church, Cherryville, in 1974, following the merger of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Indianland, and Christ Little Moore. He was on several church councils. He was on the executive board of Northeastern Pennsylvania Synod for six years, of which he was the treasurer from 1997 to 2003.
He was a member of the Lehigh Township Municipal Authority, a treasurer of Indianland Cemetery Association for more than 40 years and a former chairman of Lehigh Township Planning Commission, Lehigh Township Zoning Hearing Board and Treichlers Water Authority.
He was a member of the Association of Mental Health Administrators and American Academy of Mental Health Administrators.
He received citations of recognition for exemplary service by the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives and Senate.
He is survived by three sons, Dennis D. and his wife Patricia Newhart of Bethlehem and their children, Allison and Stephanie; Ronald E. and his wife Patsy Newhart of Lebanon and their children, James, Meredith and Samuel; and Donald W. Newhart of Bellfonte; a daughter, Nancy L. and her husband Dennis Biechy of Whitehall and their children, Katie and Scott; and eight great-grandchildren.
