Zephs in middle of indoor track season
While the recent spate of warm weather may have some ready for the upcoming outdoor season, the calendar still says winter and Whitehall is in the midst of their indoor track and field season.
The Zephyrs have competed in the Lebanon Valley College Dutchmen High School Invitational, the Robert J. Burdette Indoor Classic, and two meets at Albright College this winter.
Head coach James Sebesta said that participation this year has been somewhat lighter than in the past, but they still had some strong performances by those competing.
That list starts with sprinter Amanda Crooks. Sebesta said that Crooks qualified for the Pennsylvania Track and Field Coaches Association Indoor State Championships to be held this Saturday at State College.
Crooks won the 55 meter dash at the Dutchmen, breaking the tape in 7.42. She was also second in the 200 at 28.29, sharing the same time as first-place winner Destinee Holloman.
Crooks was sixth at the Burdette in the 60 meter dash, finishing in 7.89. Liberty standout Jaclyn Aminu placed second, bested by winner Sydney Hawkins from Phillipsburg (7.71).
Sebesta said that Crooks is seeded sixth in the 60 meters for the PTFCA Indoor Champiosnhips. However, Sebesta said that Crooks has been battling some illness recently, but that hasn’t dampened anyone’s spirit as they head to State College where she’ll run against the best in the state.
Another sprinter/middle distance runner who has made a mark this winter is Kate Bonshak. Sebesta said that Bonshak has looked really good. She was 10th in the 200 at the Dutchmen (29.40), while also capturing 4th in the 400, crossing the line in 1:08.24.
“She’s really going to help us this spring,” said Sebesta,
The girls 4x100 team came in fourth as Crooks, Bonshak, Kassidy Cunningham and Autumn Dragovits teamed up for a 4:50.26 run.
Cunningham also finished 9th in the 800, hitting the tape in 2:47.52.
The pole vaulters also had good results at the Dutchmen, with Elizabeth Rosario placing 4th, clearing 7-00, while Savanah Rivera was 5th at the same height.
In the high jump, Hayley Fenstermaker finished 12th with a 4-0 leap.
For the boys, Zahir Linton finished 7th in the 400 meter dash, crossing the line in 58.72. Jerome Wah was 15th in the 400 meters, finishing in 1:00.45. Sebesta said that Wah has been a consistent performer throughout the indoor season.
Gavin Wood turned in a solid performance at the Dutchmen in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 12-00 for second place. Wood was also involved in the VaultWorkX meet held in Camp Hill as well as Vertical Assault in Bethlehem. He placed 7th at the VaultWorkX meet with a 12-3 mark.
Sebesta said that Wood has consistently vaulted over 12 feet during the indoor season.
Sebesta also said that some throwers were also establishing some good marks this winter. Michael Bogucki was one of them. He finished in the 14th in the shot put at the Dutchmen with a 34-11 toss.
Angel Falcon was 7th in the high jump at the Dutchmen, clearing the bar at 5-2.
At one of the Albright meets, Aliyah Barkley finished 7th in the long jump with a 13-01.75 mark. Additionally, Martin Labib was 10th in the 200 meter dash with a 26.67 mark.
Middle distance runner Andrew Hawk was third in the 800 meters at the same Albright event, finishing in 2:16.77, while Cunningham finished third on the girls side with a time of 2:44.81.
Sebesta said that Hawk is another competitor who’s rounding into shape during the indoor season.
“Everybody who’s attended has worked hard and it’s good to get the young kids some experience,” said Sebesta. “We’ve been outside [practicing] most of the winter, but as soon as March hits, that’s when we’ll get all the snow.”
