Tigers’ Seyler nominated for LVFSA

Northwestern senior Andrew Seyler has been selected as the Tiger football team’s scholar-athlete and will represent his team next weekend at the annual Lehigh Valley Football Scholar-Athlete Banquet.

Seyler is a 5-foot-11, 215-pound lineman. He ranks eighth in his class of 181 students and is an honor roll student. He’s also a member of the National Honor Society and Science Curricular Honor Society. Seyler is treasurer of his class, a member of the future health professionals organization HOSA and part of the Emerging Health Professionals Program. He also plays lacrosse and volunteers at the Allentown Rescue Mission, the Twice Blessed Store. He is an active member of his church youth group and serves as a student mentor.

The banquet will be held on Sunday, March 5 at 4:30 p.m. at the Northampton Community Center.

The following is a list of this year’s Lehigh Valley Football Scholar-Athlete nominees.

HIGH SCHOOL

SCHOLAR-ATHLETES

Allen – Marcus Dileo Vereen

A 6-2, 253 pound tight end and defensive end, he ranks 76th in his class with a 3.53 GPA. He earned first team All-Conference honors on offense as a tight end. He is active in his community.

Bangor – Ean Joseph Sheats

A 5-8, 180-pound tight end and linebacker, he ranks 14th out of 242 students. He is an honor roll student, National Honor Society member, and member of the Spanish Curricular Honor Society. He is an Eagle Scout and a member of the Trailblazers Hiking Club, serving as the hiking club coordinator. He is active in his church youth group and the Venture Crew, a boy scout group that provides positive experiences helping young people mature while preparing them to be responsible adults.

Bethlehem Catholic – Liam D. Nixon

A 5-10, 165-pound quarterback in a class of 204 students. He is an honor roll student and serves as class vice president. He participates in the class play musical, is a debate team member, a peer listener, member of the SADD Club, and serves on the EPC Leadership Council. He is a classical singer, plays piano, serves on the church choir, and volunteers with Cops and Kids and a soup kitchen.

Catasauqua – John Edward Stires

A 5-9, 145-pound linebacker, he ranks 13th out of 114 students. He is an honor roll student and National Honor Society member. He participates in student council, Scholastic Scrimmage, the Varsity C Club, SADD, and varsity track. He is part of the Lehigh University Scholars Program, a volunteer teacher assistant and a youth sports coach.

Central Catholic – Thomas Joseph Murphy

A 6-2, 205-pound wide receiver and outside linebacker, he ranks 45th out of 221 students. He is an honor roll student, member of the National Honor Society, and earned first team all-conference honors. He participates in the Key Club, is CEO for the Viking Store, a student tutor, and plays varsity lacrosse. He is a youth lacrosse referee, volunteers with the Second Harvest Food Bank, and is an active Christian teen serving as an elderly aide.

Dieruff – Anthony J. Mendoza

A 5-10, 185-pound linebacker, he ranks 113th out of 437 students. He is an honor roll student. He served as vice president of the Husky Leaders in 2015-2016 and is president of the Husky Leaders Academic Program in 2016-2017. He is active in his community.

East Stroudsburg North – Thomas Rocco Melchiorre

A 5-9, 175-pound quarterback, outside linebacker, and kicker, he ranks 33rd out of 233 students. He is an honor roll student, member of the National Honor Society, and earned all-conference first team honors on offense. He is a class officer in student government, a Hobe Leadership Seminar participant, homecoming king, Mini-Maxwell Award winner and participates in varsity track. He volunteers with the Bushkill Elementary Field Day and Kickoff Event, the Salvation Army, and is a Read Across Campus participant.

East Stroudsburg South – Joelle Elias Duroseau

A 5-10, 170-pound strong safety, he ranks 19th out of 341 students. He is an honor roll student and member of the National Honor Society. He is a member of student government, participates in varsity track, the class play/musical, and is an academic tutor. He volunteers with Special Olympics, is a blood donor, a Tribal Wars Council head and is a student leader/youth coordinator for grades 6-12.

Easton – Michael Pugliese

A 6- 230-pound offensive guard and defensive tackle, he ranks 146th out of 673 students. He earned first team all-conference honors on both offense and defense. He participates in varsity track. He volunteers for the Boys and Girls Club and as a youth basketball coach.

Emmaus – Brian Thomas Mantone

A 6-0, 170-pound wide receiver and free safety, he ranks 121st out of 673 students. He is an honor roll student and member of the Curricular Honor Society. He serves as class president, is editor of the school newspaper, participates in varsity track, the Architecture Building Team, Hornet Ambassadors, the Lunch Buddy Program, and is a powder puff coach. He volunteers with Special Olympics, the Construction Food Drive Challenge, Spirit of the Lehigh Valley, is a youth football coach and is active in his church.

Freedom – Steven Matthew Rold

A 6- 215-pound tight end, fullback, linebacker, and punter/kicker, he ranks 44th out of 453 students. He is an honor roll student and member of the National Honor Society. He is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Young Americans Foundation. He serves in his church youth group and is a youth football volunteer assistant.

Jim Thorpe – Derek Jeffrey Scott

A 5-11, 240-pound offensive guard, he ranks 14th out of 139 students. He is an honor roll student, member of the National Honor Society, and earned second team all-conference honors. He is a student government member, and participates in varsity basketball and track. He is a Student Rotarian, member of the SADD, Spanish, and powerlifting clubs. He volunteers as a student reader for elementary students, the Strawberry Social, Jim Thorpe National Night Out, the Carbon County Senior Fair and is a church acolyte.

Lehighton – Grant Alexander Wetzel

A 5-8, 150-pound cornerback, wide receiver, and punter, he ranks 11th out of 147 students. He is an honor roll student and member of the National Honor Society. He participates in varsity wrestling and the jazz band. He is active in his church, participating as a worship leader.

Liberty – Christian Rhys Gallagher

A 5-10, 210-pound defensive tackle, he ranks 120th out of 690 students. He is an honor roll student and earned second team all-conference honors. He participates in varsity wrestling and is the anchor/editor for the Video Production Club. His community activities include volunteering for the Boys and Girls Club.

Nazareth Area High School – Travis Cade Stefanik

A 6-0 185-pound quarterback and safety, he ranks 67th out of 378 students. He is an honor roll student and earned all-conference first team honors on offense and defense. He is a class officer in student government, participates in varsity wrestling, is a member of SADD and FBLA where he was two-time state qualifier. He volunteers with the Relay for Life, youth football and wrestling and is a church altar server.

Northampton – Colin Robert Schucker

A 6-1, 190-pound quarterback, he ranks 81st out of 412 students. He is an honor roll student and member of the National Honor Society. He is a member of the DECA Business Club, SADD, the Physical Education Club, and participates in varsity track. His community activities include volunteering with the Northampton County Miracle League Trick or Treat and a youth football camp.

Northern Lehigh – Jeremy Hunter Schmick

A 5-9, 200-pound center, he ranks 23rd out of 131 students. He is an honor roll student who has attained a 4.05 GPA. He is a member of the Northern Lehigh Patriot Club. He is active in his community.

Northwestern – Andrew James Seyler

A 5-11, 215-pound defensive end, he ranks eighth out of 181 students. He is an honor roll student, member of the National Honor Society, and member of the Science Curricular Honor Society. He is the class treasurer, HOSA treasurer, member of the Emerging Health Professionals Program and participates in varsity lacrosse. He volunteers with the Allentown Rescue Mission, the Twice Blessed Store, his church youth group and serves as a student mentor.

Notre Dame – Austin Michael Kaulius

A 6-1, 180-pound wide receiver and safety, he ranks seventh out of 140 students. He is an Honor roll student, National Honor Society member, and Spanish Curricular Honor Society member. He is a member of the Key Club, the Notre Dame Mini-Thon, the Greenhouse Club, student council, and participates in varsity baseball and basketball. He serves as an Angel 34 Foundation student board member. He volunteers with the Miracle League, Relay for Life and is camp counselor for football, baseball and basketball.

Palisades – Andrew Aaron Nickles

A 6-5, 220-pound tight end and defensive end, he ranks 53rd out of 148 students. He is an honor roll student and earned first team all-conference honors on offense. He participates in varsity baseball. He volunteers with the Relay for Life, the Canned Food Drive and the Clothing Drive.

Palmerton – Garrett Thomas Perschy

A 6-1, 205-pound quarterback, he ranks eighth out of 89 students. He is an honor roll student, member of the National Honor Society, and earned all-conference first team honors. He is a member of the Environmental Club, student council, FBLA, the Gridiron Club, is an academic tutor and participates in varsity basketball. He volunteers with Special Olympics, the Football Food Drive, the Palmerton Veterans Day Parade, the Veterans Moving Wall, a youth football camp, his church youth group, and is an altar server.

Parkland – Ethan Thomas Imler

A 6-1, 190-pound safety, he ranks 43rd out of 804 students. He is an honor roll student, National Honor Society member, and Curricular Honor Society member for both math and science. He is a member of the Powerlifting Club, the Welcome Pack Club and serves as an academic tutor. He volunteers with Camelot for Children, Spirit of the Lehigh Valley, the Welcome Pack Holiday Dinner for senior citizens, Special Olympics and the Miracle League.

Pen Argyl – Logan Stewart Ruppert

A 5-10, 182-pound quarterback, linebacker, and safety, he ranks 20th out of 127 students. He is an honor roll student, member of the National Honor Society, and earned all-conference first team honors on defense. He participates in varsity baseball, is a peer mediator, member of SADD, Everyone Stands Together, the School Spirit Club and FBLA. He volunteers with the Lauren’s Hope Foundation and serves as a youth football coach.

Phillipsburg – Zachary Alvin Troxell

A 6-2, 235-pound tight end and defensive end, he ranks fifth out of 435 students. He is an honor roll student and National Honor Society member with a 5.61 GPA. He earned first team All-Conference honors on offense and third team on defense. He is a class officer, FFA member, a math academic tutor and a varsity basketball captain. He volunteers as a junior board member of Lauren’s First and Goal and is an altar server.

Pleasant Valley – Benjamin Michael Bard

A 5-10, 205-pound linebacker and tight end, he ranks 58th out of 430 students. He is an honor roll student, National Honor Society member and National Math Honor Society member. He participates in varsity track, is a Math Academic Tutor, an EPC Scholar Athlete Representative, and FBLA member who placed first in regionals and 11th in states. He volunteers at Valor Center Homeless Vet Home, is a youth football and track and field coach and is a teacher/helper with his church’s youth ministry.

Pocono Mountain East – Robert Christopher Fox

A 5-7, 190-pound linebacker and offensive right guard, he ranks 11th in his class, placing him in the top five percent. He is an honor roll student, National Honor Society member, and Curricular Honor Society member. He participates in varsity wrestling and the yearbook staff. He works as an employee of Jersey Mike’s Subs and is active in his community.

Pocono Mountain West – Steven Matthew Bowen

A 5-11, 190-pound tailback and defensive back, he ranks 118th out of 410 students. He is an honor roll student and participates in varsity track and the Weightlifting Club. He volunteers as a bell ringer with the Salvation Army and is a literary partner for elementary students.

Salisbury – Eric John Frankenfield

A 6-2, 215-pound fullback and defensive end, he ranks 30th out of 157 students. He is an honor roll student, member of the National Honor Society, and earned honorable mention all-conference honors on defense. He participates in varsity basketball and track, is a math and physics academic tutor, school yearbook editor, and a class officer. He is a member of FBLA, the Powerlifting Club, the Model United Nations and the Best Buddies Program. He led the Touchdown Against Cancer Campaign and is a youth sports coach.

Saucon Valley – Konstandinos E. Zaharakis

A 5-5, 165-pound linebacker and fullback, he ranks 35th out of 182 students. He is an honor roll student and member of the National Honor Society. He is the class vice president, participates in the class play/musical, varsity wrestling and lacrosse. He is a Model United Nations member and runs a small business based off a patented product he created. He volunteers with the Lehigh Valley Outreach Depot and is an altar server in his church.

Southern Lehigh – Gary Lee Popowitz, Jr.

A 5-9, 235-pound offensive guard and defensive tackle, he ranks 57th out of 277 students. He is an honor roll student and earned second team all-conference honors on offense. He is a college algebra academic tutor and participates in the football weight training program. He volunteers with the Coopersburg Halloween Parade and 5K race, serves as a youth football coach and referee, Liberty Bell Fitness Night and football support for Sassy Massey.

Stroudsburg – Hunter Paul Holmes

A 6- 170-pound offensive lineman, he ranks fourth out of 447 students. He is an honor roll student, member of the National Honor Society, and a National Merit Scholar. He participates in varsity wrestling and track. He has participated in mission trips to El Salvador and Washington D.C. and many church outreaches to the community.

Whitehall – Jackson Buskirk

A 6-0 180-pound defensive back, wide receiver, and punter, he ranks 51st out of 360 students. He is a high honor roll student, National Honor Society member and Curricular Honor Society member in math, science, English and Spanish. He earned first team all-state honors on defense, as well as all-conference honors. He participates in varsity basketball and track, serves on the student council and is a member of the Student Focus Group. He is a Special Olympics volunteer, is active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and coaches youth football and basketball.

Wilson – Zachary John Febbo

A 5-11, 180-pound offensive lineman and middle linebacker, he ranks 40th out of 160 students. He is an honor roll student with a grade-point average of 97.15. He participates in varsity basketball and baseball. He is active in his community.

COLLEGE SCHOLAR-ATHLETES

East Stroudsburg University – Sean Roth

A 5-9, 210-pound fullback, he has a 3.623 GPA, majoring in business management. He is a dean’s list student, member of the athletic Director’s honor roll, a PSAC Scholar Athlete, and graduated Magna Cum Laude. He is a two-year Redshirt Award winner and captain. He has served the ESU Big Brother Breakfast with the Warriors Program, has been a Salvation Army bell ringer, a Special Olympics volunteer, an ESU Mini-Thon volunteer and is an active member in the P.A.L.S. Program.

Kutztown University – Zachary Delp

A 6-0 225-pound linebacker, he has a 3.40 GPA, majoring in business administration. He is a two-time dean’s list honor student, a two-time PSAC Scholar Athlete, a three-time All-PSAC East selection and three-time PSAC Athlete of the Week. He served as captain the last two years, played in 41 games with 295 tackles, 15.5 sacks, and five interceptions. He volunteers with the Kutztown Optimist Club, Fools Run, Get in the Game, Bone Marrow Drive, the Angel 34 Program and the Kutztown Clean-Up on Main Street Program.

Lafayette College – Blake S. Searfoss

A 6-2, 210-pound quarterback, he has a 3.30 GPA, majoring in mathematics and economics. He is a four-time dean’s list student, a student athlete academic honor roll student and a member of the Envestnet Institute on Campus Certification Program. He earned Patriot League Player of the Week honors and was a U.S. High School Lacrosse All-American. He is a Peripheral Stem Cell Donor through the Be the Match, Bone Marrow Program, a Chi Phi Fraternity member and a Lauren’s First and Goal volunteer. He plans to pursue a business career in New York City.

Lehigh University – Micah Tennant

A 6-6, 285-pound offensive lineman, he has a 3.90 GPA, majoring in mechanical engineering. He is a dean’s list student every semester including two 4.0 semesters, a 2016 Academic All-Patriot League selection, a three-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll student, a 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-American first team selection, and a 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-District team choice. He is a student mentor for first-year student athletes, and is involved in Lehigh’s Adopt a Family event. His interests include mountain biking, hiking, traveling and music, as he plays three different instruments.

Moravian College – Jalen Snyder-Scipio

A 6-3, 215-pound wide receiver, he has a 3.70 GPA, majoring in nursing. He is five-time dean’s list student, a 2015 Academic All-Centennial Conference selection, and a three-year Centennial Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll member. He is a recipient of the Bredeigam RN Scholarship and the Harlan F. Fulmer and M. Eleanor Kern Fulmer Scholarship. He is a Student Nurses Association member, Student Development and Progression Team Chair, Student Athletic Advisory member, Special Olympics volunteer, and a 2016 All-State Good Works nominee.

Muhlenberg College – William Britt

A 6-4, 280-pound offensive left tackle, he has a 3.826 GPA, majoring in mathematics and economics. He is a first team All-American in 2016 as named by the American Football Coaches Association, and is a three-time All-Centennial Conference first team selection. He is a member of the Mathematics Society and served as team captain this fall. He started all four years at left tackle and never missed a snap. Willie is from Frenchtown, NJ and Delaware Valley Regional High School.
