Edwards named a captain at LVC
Lebanon Valley head coach Keith Evans recently announced that senior pitchers Michael Houseal and Casey Wall, along with senior second basemen Zac Edwards have been elected team captains for the upcoming 2017 baseball season.
Houseal was a captain last year and led the Dutchmen pitching staff with 67.2 innings pitched, while posting a 5-2 record and a 4.26 ERA. He also ranked first among LVC pitchers in strikeouts with 42 and tied for complete games with three.
“Michael has been a conference starter his entire career,” said head coach Evans. “He is very committed to the program both on and off the field.”
Wall was also a captain in 2016 and will return to that role in 2017. The senior started nine games on the mound for the Dutchmen a season ago and was second on the game in punchouts with 31. He tied with Houseal for complete games with three last year and in 2015, he was named to the MAC Commonwealth All-Conference Team.
“Casey is an unbelievable teammate and his positive attitude is very infection,” stated Evans.
Edwards, a Catasauqua native, enters his senior season after tallying 41 hits and scoring 24 runs a season ago. He started 34 games at second base and was second on the team in runs scored and third on the team in hits. He finished out the 2016 season with a .336 batting average and a team-high 14 stolen bases, to go along with a .421 on-base percentage. He also recorded the 100th hit of his career last season and was a MAC Commonwealth All-Conference Second Team selection.
“Zac has been a mainstay at second base and is always working to be a better hitter and overall player,” said Evans of his second basemen.
Evans also said that the senior class this year has been tremendous throughout their time here and have set an incredible example for the rest of the team. “The core of this senior class has really set a precedent for our program. Michael Puglisi and Corey Sell, along with the other seniors and the captains have been outstanding on the field and in the classroom.”
LVC’s 2017 season is set to begin February 25, 2017 when the Dutchmen host Penn Tech for a doubleheader pending Mother Nature’s approval.
