Catasauqua’s boys’ basketball team will advance to the upcoming district playoffs for the first time in two years, but the Roughies certainly will have to deal with some interesting circumstances along the way.

The Roughies closed out the regular season this week with games against Northwestern (a loss) and Notre Dame East Stroudsburg. Unfortunately, they just missed grabbing the sixth and final spot in the Colonial League playoffs when they lost a tight game to Moravian Academy in a winner-take-all for the space.

Catty dropped a 77-73 contest at Northwestern Tuesday night before their regular season ended the following night at home against Notre Dame-East Stroudsburg, which was after Press deadlines.

The Roughies had hoped to play that game sometimes next week for some action before their district layoff. However, Notre Dame failed to qualify for districts and wanted to end their season in a timely manner.

Catty will now wait until the weekend of Feb. 24 to begin district play. They likely will enter as the third seed in 3A and will have a matchup against Minersville or Pine Grove. Even though they didn’t have a .500 or better overall record (8-13 heading into the NDES game), the Roughies managed to take one of the top spots in the bracket.

It will be their first return in two years and they could again face Notre Dame-Green Pond in the second round, a team that defeated them in the district final during their last stay.

“We were hoping to get into the league playoffs,” said head coach Eric Snyder. “But we stopped scoring as a team in that game. It came down to Isaiah (Graves) and Jalen (Green). We are better when we have balanced scoring.

“We also thought we may have a shot at second place in the district playoffs, but it looks like we’ll open as the third seed.”

With Notre Dame-East Stroudsburg being played during the final week, Snyder will look to arrange some scrimmages for his club that will have a two-week-plus layoff before district play. He will also seek to maintain a rounded scoring attack in the postseason, injecting guards Andrew Brett and Colin Hawk into the mix.

Still, Snyder appreciates his team’s current stance.

“We’ll get a couple of scrimmages, but it isn’t the same as playing a game,” he added. “Isaiah (Graves) and Jalen (Green) account for most of our scoring. Brett has played very well defensively and he is always talking during the game. He is the type of player who is all over the court and at 5-10 is often playing the middle on defense. If Hawk is scoring along with Brett, it helps us.

“But it is good to be in districts. It was one of our goals and we’re happy to achieve it.”
