St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 417 Howertown Road, will host a memorial service honoring The Immortal Chaplains. This interfaith service will take place 4 p.m. Feb. 12. A light reception will follow the memorial service.

The Immortal Chaplains were four U.S. Army chaplains who gave their lives to save other civilian and military personnel as the Troop Ship SS Dorchester sank Feb. 3, 1943, during World War II. The four chaplains helped other soldiers board lifeboats and gave up their own life jackets when the supply ran out. The chaplains joined arms, said prayers and sang hymns as they went down with the ship. The Four Chaplains and 668 other men perished when the Dorchester was torpedoed and sunk.

The service is held in partnership with Catasauqua American Legion Post 215. In addition to participation by legion members, local religious and elected leaders have been invited.
