Kutzler leaves South Whitehall, goes with Jaindl
Township Manager Howard Kutzler is leaving South Whitehall and a 30-year career in municipal government to take a position in the private sector with the Jaindl Land Co.
At the Feb. 1 meeting, commissioners wished Kutzler well in his new endeavor, showing obvious respect and affection for the departing manager whose last day is Feb. 16.
Board President Christina “Tori” Morgan commented on Kutzler’s work.
“Howard’s professionalism, organization skills and leadership have been a great asset to the township,” Morgan said. “During Howard’s tenure, the township has made great strides in improving efficiencies and better serving its constituents.”
Kutzler was respectful when residents expressed problems during the public comment portion of meetings and followed through with an appropriate plan of action at the next meeting.
Morgan credited Kutzler for his part in enabling South Whitehall to receive the 2016 Community of Distinction award from the Lehigh Valley Planning Commission.
“Howard’s efforts as township manager played a direct and important role in this significant township accomplishment and many other positive strides of our great community,” Morgan said.
Throughout his term, Kutzler expressed satisfaction when new businesses came in and chose to invest in South Whitehall.
He wanted the township to look attractive and supported a project to update Hamilton Boulevard to make it a more welcoming gateway to the area.
Kutzler joined South Whitehall staff as director of administration in Nov. 2013, then moved on to acting township manager with the departure of Jon Hammer in August 2014.
In January 2015, Kutzler received unanimous approval as township manager.
His background includes experience in community and economic development, planning, and zoning.
Commissioner David Bond noted Kutzler was generous in giving accolades to township staff and the volunteer fire departments.
Commissioner Matt Mulqueen also commented.
“The amount of energy and enthusiasm you’ve brought has been an inspiration,” Mulqueen said.
“You have brought to our group a new way of thinking,” Morgan added.
She said Kutzler will continue to contribute to the community in his new position at Jaindl.
However, he will not be present for awhile at township meetings.
“I’m subject to Pennsylvania ethics rules and must stay away for a year,” Kutzler said.
Assistant Township Manager Renee Bickel was approved as interim township manager effective Feb. 17 until Kutzler’s successor is named.
