Swimmers sweep PME
The Northampton swim team hosted Pocono Mountain East on Tuesday, Feb. 7, for a meet filled with close finishes, personal best times and races won by fractions of a second.
In the end, both the Northampton girls and boys squads would emerge with a victory over Pocono East. The scores were 102–78 for the girls and 105-68 for the boys.
Some highlights of the evening included about half of the Northampton swimmers achieving personal best times by coach Cullen Mentzell’s estimation.
“I’d say about 50-percent of the team had best times tonight,” said Mentzell. “I was happy overall with the meet.”
Giving a particular nod to the freshman on the team who have been working hard in their first varsity season, Mentzell continued.
“A few of the freshman swimmers had a good meet tonight, Danielle Weaver, Bryce Fisher and Morgan Thomas did well.”
In addition, freshman Dominick Fragano took first in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:07.61. Morgan Fehnel took first place in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:20.18. Senior Michael Bauer achieved back to back wins in the 50 freestyle event (22.25) and the 100 butterfly (54.15). Larisa Calvo achieved a first place finish for the girls squad with a 1:02.99 win in the 100 freestyle.
Northampton’s Brynne Rockovits and Gavyn Frankenfield won the girls and boys 200 individual medley events with times of 2:19.13 and 2:12.86, respectively. Distance swimmers Nicole Somers and Jack Kennedy claimed first place in the girls and boys 500 freestyle events with winning times of 6:10.12 and 5:26.04, respectively.
Looking forward to the last two meets of the season, Mentzell said, “the focus is on just getting the rest of the kids district qualifying times.”
Northampton travels to Pocono Mountain West on Thursday afternoon and welcomes Easton for the final meet of the season on Thursday, Feb. 16, at 5 p.m.
