John S. “Jack” Hayes
John S.
“Jack” Hayes, 84, of Emmaus, died peacefully Jan. 31, 2017, at his home surrounded
by his family. He was the husband of Marianne DiSalvo Hayes. They were married 61 years. Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Stanley J. and Anna M. (Brett) Hayes.
He was a 1950 graduate of Seton Hall Preparatory School and was inducted into the school’s football Hall of Fame in 2010. He was a 1954 graduate of Villanova University and a 1959 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Law School.
He served in the U.S. Navy and Naval Reserve 23 years, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
After working as corporate counsel for Lehigh Portland Cement, he entered private practice with his own firm of Hayes & Feege. His career took him to various positions in government and government relations. He served as a seminar leader in labor and employment relations for Penn State University, legal assistant to the Chairman of the National Labor Relations Board and as a political coordinator for national and state political campaigns.
His many accolades include being named in “The Best Lawyers in America” for over 20 years under Labor and Employment Law; recognized in the Martindale-Hubbell Bar Register of AV Pre-eminent Lawyers and the National Registry of Who’s Who.
He was an active member of St. Ann Catholic Church, Emmaus, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister, lector, commentator and a member of the parish council for many years.
He was a member of the SERRA Club. He served as past president of the Diocese of Allentown Board of Education, the President’s Council of DeSales University, the executive committee of the Lehigh Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross, the Lehigh Valley Advisory Board to PNC Bank, was counsel to the Eastern PA Emergency Medical Society and was past president of the Industrial Relations Research Association of Northeastern PA. He was a member of the American Arbitration Association, the American, Federal, Pennsylvania and Lehigh County Bar Associations and was an active participant in committee work in all of these associations.
He was a coach of Catholic Youth Organization basketball teams and a member of numerous social organizations including the Emmaus Rotary Club, Moselem Springs Golf Club and Lehman Lake Rod and Gun Club. He was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and was a Knight Commander of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem.
He is survived by his wife; daughters, Kathleen and her husband William Taylor, Teresa and her husband Richard O’Flynn, Anne and her husband Louis DeVoto; son, John; grandchildren, Maureen and her husband Matthew Vitris, Meghan Taylor, Allison, Thomas DeVoto, Emily DeVoto, Richard O’Flynn and Caroline DeVoto. He was predeceased by a sister, Ann Donnelly.
