Greene reaches goal of 100 wins

For Ryan Greene, reaching a major milestone in his wrestling career isn’t anything new.

Since he began his wrestling career in the early grades, Greene has been goal driven. He recalled how reaching an earlier high point in the Valley Youth Elementary Wrestling League was a challenge.

“I really wanted to win a championship then,” noted Greene. “I got silver in my second year when I was in fourth grade. Then I finally won it when I was in sixth (grade). I just knew I had to keep working and I figured I would get it.”

A few years later when he started his high school career, Greene began another major quest. Recently, he reached his goal when he recorded his 100th career win, one of only 14 recipients to achieve the mark.

Greene feels both grateful and bewildered on gaining the milestone.

“I really don’t know how to feel,” said the senior. “It (100 wins) has been something I have been trying to reach since I got to high school. In a way, it is a sense of relief, but I am also very grateful to be part of such a small group.

“I feel really proud of what I have done and also having my name on the banner.”

Head coach Kyle Rusnock has watched Greene develop over the years. He believes Greene can return to the states this year after he last made the trip during his sophomore season.

“Ryan (Greene) has worked hard over the years and he began to reach his potential the past few years,” said Rusnock. “He should be back at states this year as he is very focused. Getting 100 wins is quite an accomplishment.”

Greene sees himself competing at the 145-pound bracket instead of 152, where he also has wrestled this year.

“That (145) is the best class for me,” said Greene. “I feel really strong and fast. I feel like I can really wrestle well at 145.”

Greene also has derived much inspiration from his older brother, Devin, whom he had wrestled alongside until he graduated last year.

“He (Devin) has been a role model for me,” said Greene. “He has always been there for me. We text every day and he is always offering me advice.”

Greene will get his crack to put the final touches on his career when districts begin later this month. His milestone also marked the final chapter with the Roughies.

“Getting the 100 wins also reminded me that my high school career is almost over,” he said. “We’re all anxious to wrestle again. We all believe we have something to prove.”
