Front St. switch moved to June

Two-way Front Street traffic was discussed at the Jan. 30 meeting of the Catasauqua Borough Council and will be on the agenda in March as well.

The scheduling and coordination of converting part of Front Street from one-way to two-way traffic is projected to take longer than originally planned, stretching the proposed implementation date from April 1 to sometime in June.

“In our discussions with [borough engineering consultant] Pidcock, they suggested we wait until after school lets out, Councilwoman Christine Weaver said. “That way we don’t need to contend with school bus traffic.”

Weaver is coordinating the effort.

The new municipal building at the Iron Works development along Front Street is scheduled to open at the beginning of July.

Weaver said the plan for the changeover is to close the street and ban all parking on the day before the change.

“Crews can get in and stripe the streets, and then we can open everything up again,” she said.

A vote to approve the delayed schedule will be on the March 6 council meeting agenda.

Also at the March meeting will be a presentation on the process for selling the remaining acreage on the Iron Works site.

In other business, borough Mayor Barbara Schlegel announced Arbor Day ceremonies will be held 10 a.m. April 22 at the large pavilion in municipal park. Traditionally there is a boroughwide cleanup scheduled for the same day and the events ran concurrently in the past. Council President Vincent Smith suggested the cleanup be delayed until after the Arbor Day ceremonies. The details will be discussed with the cleanup committee organizer, Candace Winkler.

Weaver announced there is a vacancy on the borough’s planning commission. With all the future projects planned for the borough, council is hoping to fill the seat quickly.
