Harvey Lamar Smith Jr.

Harvey Lamar Smith Jr., 88, of New Ringgold, died Jan. 22, 2017, in Reading Hospital, West Reading, surrounded by his loving family.

The loving husband of Dolores R. (Astolfi) Smith, they were married 68 years last June.

Born March 14, 1928, in Middleport, Schuylkill County, he was the son of the late Harvey L. Sr. and Eva (Troutman) Smith.

He faithfully and honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War era serving on the USS Allagash.

After graduating from Ford Business School, Pottsville, he was the bookkeeper for Hummel Buick, Schuylkill Haven.

He and his wife became second-generation co-owners of Smith’s Country Inn, New Ringgold, which was recognized as the longest continuous running business in Schuylkill County, having started as a stagecoach stop in 1769.

He was proud of the fine dining establishment they developed. Many of their customers became like family.

In their free time, he and his wife enjoyed traveling in the Ephrata and Lancaster County area.

He especially enjoyed family trips to Disney World.

He was a member of Friedens Evangelical Lutheran Church, New Ringgold, Schuylkill Masonic Lodge 0138, F.& A.M., Orwigsburg, Rajah Shrine, Reading, and American Legion Post 0144, Middleport.

In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by a daughter, Sandra L., wife of the Rev. Michael J. Bodnyk of Orefield; grandson Michael John Bodnyk Jr. of Manhattan, New York; and sister Rita Bailey of Orwigsburg.
