A Cornus kousa, or Chinese dogwood, tree recently was recognized as the winter 2017 Tree of the Season by members of the Emmaus Shade Tree Commission.
The tree stands in the yard of Tom Aczel and Michele Raes, homeowners, in the 100 block of Spruce Street in Emmaus.
In a recent media release to The Press, Everett “Reds” Bailey, shade commission chair, noted the “unique winter appearance” of the tree, drawing attention to what he described as the tree’s “exfoliating older bark.”
Moreover, proper use of mulch and pruning practices, according to Bailey, a certified arborist, have helped keep the tree in award-winning condition.
The Longwood Gardens website lists the Chinese dogwood as a native plant of Japan, Korea and China. The tree displays white blossoms among its leaves when it flowers in the spring.
The Tree of the Season Award recognizes well-maintained trees in Emmaus borough. Recognition of outstanding trees started in 2005.
“The trees chosen have outstanding features, whether its is unusual size, interesting bark or branching or just is an exceptional example of proper care,” Bailey wrote in an email to The Press Jan. 17.
