Condition of state roads criticized

At an otherwise uneventful supervisors’ meeting Jan. 19, the condition of state roads in the township was criticized to a representative of State Sen. Pat Browne, R-16th, who was paying his annual visit to the township to listen to its concerns.

Matthew Szuchy, Browne’s local government liaison, found himself bombarded by resident Phil Casey and supervisors with complaints about the roads and the state’s snowplowing efforts.

The township “spends too much energy trying to police your roads,” Casey said. He also complained “your snowplowing is lousy.”

He and supervisor Daniel Mohr singled out the condition of Vera Cruz Road south of Emmaus, where a pipe that is collapsing has caused a section of the road to sink.

Supervisors Chairman George DeVault said the state was notified of the situation a year ago, but the repair efforts have been insufficient.

Szuchy said “we’ve heard [these complaints] time and time again” and promised to follow up with Sen. Browne.

In addition to the routine tasks of approving minutes and paying bills, supervisors at the meeting spent 20 minutes in executive session to discuss personnel. They also announced they had held another executive session on personnel issues 4 to 6 p.m. Jan. 18.

While supervisors didn’t give any further information about the topics discussed in those sessions, it is known they are looking for a replacement for Assistant Township Manager Tim Haas, who resigned last month.
