Liberty hands girls first loss
It was a battle of unbeaten teams when the Liberty girls and Whitehall girls swim teams faced off Tuesday afternoon. Unfortunately for the Zephs, the Hurricanes came out on top 97-68.
In the boys match, the guys lost 91-66.
For head coach Pete Rile, this is a stretch of tough meets he could see coming on the schedule.
“We expected to hit a rough patch soon with Liberty and Nazareth in the future,” Rile said last week.
Despite the loss, there were some standouts for both sides. For the girls, Stephanie Setar, Katie Lutterschmidt and Autumn Kidulic all won individual events. Setar won the 100 butterfly in 1:03.05 while Lutterschmidt took the 500 free in 6:04.84. Kidulic won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:18.01.
The 400 free relay team picked up another win and was made up of Setar, Emily Haggerty, Cassidy Larkin and Rachael Alulis. Their winning time of 4:34.91.
Liberty was led by Abby Mack’s two wins.
On the boys side, a thrilling 200 free relay race was the highlight of the day. Liberty took first with a time of 1:31.06, which set a Whitehall pool record. That team was made up of Jake Evert, Anthony Delcorso, Jase Smith and Robert Negron. But the Whitehall boys set a school mark despite taking second. They had a time of 1:35.53 and the team was made up of Sebastian Solarte, Ziyad Zhafagy, Jordan Rivera and Dan Jablonski.
Khafagy, Rivera and Jablonski also picked up individual wins. Rivera took two events, in fact, capturing the 100 butterfly in 1:00.00 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.00. Jablonski took the 100 back in 1:00.50 and Khafagy touched first in the 200 IM in 2:18.69.
The boys 400 relay team also won thanks to Nathaniel Dolan, Jack Yadush, Nick Martinovic and Michael Nguyen. Their time was 4:10.46.
“The boys are doing well and set some school records,” Rile said. “We hope to get more. Overall the district qualifiers are light but should start picking up.”
