Girls pick up fifth win

Whitehall’s offense was purring like a kitten when they played the Huskies last Friday as they scored 70 points for their fifth win of the season.

The Zephyrs came out hot with Kylee Cunningham hitting a three-pointer to open the scoring. They continued to get good shots as a number of players got involved in the offense, including freshman Grace Clary whose big night began at the charity stripe in the first quarter.

On consecutive trips down the floor in the opening minutes of the game, Clary got to the line and converted every attempt, netting four points en route to her game-high 17. She scored both inside and out, helping spearhead a balanced offense that saw nine players get onto the stat sheet.

Their explosive night from the floor earned them a 70-31 win over Dieruff.

Head coach Dwight Repsher said that while they erupted for 70 points, their entire approach to the game on the offensive end remains “a process.” Some nights it’s going to work like it did against the Huskies, other times they’ll find themselves struggling to get into any rhythm like they did in the second half against Hazleton and Freedom.

“We’re going to have to go through and make our adjustments and get better at certain things,” said Repsher.

However, their play against the Huskies demonstrated they could find that right balance of getting good shots and converting them.

“We executed some things and we shot the ball with confidence,” said Repsher.

One player who knows about finding a balance is senior forward McKenzie Dietz. As their No. 4, she is constantly asked to guard much bigger post players. She needs to strike that balance between playing too aggressive and fouling, or trying to get an edge because of her size disadvantage.

“Mentally, you have to want to work,” said Deitz. “Especially for rebounding, you have to be ready for them. If you know that you’re in front of them, box out, and get ready.”

Dietz was able to register a block against a bigger player in the third quarter, and then hustled back down the floor to score two points flashing to the basket.

Dietz said that positioning is the key and that’s imperative when you’re always going against bigger players.

Dietz said that their success in Friday’s game began on the practice floor on Thursday. She sad they were looking to get everyone involved so all the “kick-outs” were available against the Huskies.

“We were just on today,” said Dietz who scored six points. “It was more of a team game than an individual game.”

The Zephs really broke the game open in the second half. They scored 37 points in the final two stanzas while holding the Huskies to just 12 points over that same stretch.

Alix Buskirk was once again setting the tone from the backcourt. She used an array of offensive weapons, including wing jumpers and drives to the bucket to finish with eight points.

Brianna Smith provided a punch from the perimeter, hitting three treys to help the Zephs forge ahead in the second half. She finished the game with 10 points.

Olivia George also had her marksmanship skills on display, netting two threes for six points.

Arianna Hines was a force inside, finishing with 11 points.

But it was Clary who put her imprint on the game. Repsher said that she’s been making steady progress the last few games, and it all came together against the Huskies.

“Grace had a big game,” said Repsher.

Repsher believed that everyone had a hand in Friday’s victory. It was a total team effort.

“I think we really did a nice job of working together,” he said.

He also likes the fact that they’ve cut down their turnovers recently. They’ve had five, 10 and six, respectively, in their last three games.

Repsher knows that getting into the postseason will be an uphill climb. However, he also knows that his team has been competitive in most games this season. They just need better and more consistent execution.

Dietz, for one, is up for the challenge.

“I think we can do it,” said Dietz. “If we play the way we played tonight, we can do it.”
