CHS boys have mission

Over the next two weeks, Catasauqua’s boys’ basketball mission is clear.

“We need to win games,” said head coach Eric Snyder. “We also need to score. We haven’t been able to make the plays when we need them. We can still make districts, but we simply need to win.”

The Roughies began the week in an eight-game slide, a losing streak that suddenly has dampened their postseason hopes. Catty has missed the district playoffs the past two seasons, but they have been confident to make a return.

But they rectified their course with an impressive 74-51 win over Wilson Monday night, marking their largest margin of victory and largest point total of the season.

The Roughies had four players in double figures paced by Isaiah Graves, who had a game-high 34 points followed by Colin Hawk (15 points), Andrew Brett (12) and Jalen Green (10). It was their first win since a 56-47 victory over Palisades Jan. 3.

Fortunately for the Roughies, they are in the Class 3A bracket in which four of the District 11 teams in the overall six teams will make the playoffs. Palmerton is the lone team left on the schedule in their bracket. They have an overall 6-11 mark and a 6-8 Colonial League ledger. A .500 overall record or an identical league mark will automatically punch their ticket.

The Roughies have road games at Palmerton and Salisbury this week before they return home to host Notre Dame-East Stroudsburg Monday.

“We need to get a few more wins,” said Snyder. “We have been in every game except Bangor and Lehighton. We had a tough loss at Pen Argyl in the final seconds and then came out flat the following day at Lehighton. We just weren’t ready to play (at Lehighton).”

Snyder hopes another consistent scorer can develop down the stretch. Graves, one of the leading scorers in the league, and Green both have paced the scoring throughout the season. Hawk and Brett also have been occasional contributors.

“Isaiah (Graves) and Jalen (Green) have scored the majority of our points,” added Snyder. “We need more people to step up. It has been very frustrating for us. We have been in games, but we have had trouble finishing.

“We have to take care of business in the next few weeks.”
