Catty girls enter key week

Catasauqua head girls’ basketball coach Ed Seidick believed his team’s fate and desire to get to the postseason could be decided by the end of this week.

“We should know where we stand,” said Seidick. “We believe we are playing three games that are winnable ones for us. But if it turns out to be a bad week, our run toward a district spot could be over.”

The Roughies began the week with an overall 4-11 mark (3-10 Colonial League) and has lost seven of their last eight games, the latest being a lopsided 51-30 loss to Wilson Monday night. They previously dropped a 60-19 defeat to Southern Lehigh.

“We were down 20-14 to Southern Lehigh with just two minutes to go in the first half,” stated Seidick. “We were trying a new matchup zone and we were getting them frustrated.

“But they started to run on us and we couldn’t keep up with them.”

Since they defeated Northern Lehigh, 31-28, Dec. 21, the Roughies’ lone triumph was a 47-42 win over Pen Argyl Jan. 17.

Catty also sat in 10th place in the Class A district ratings, a bracket that will take the top eight teams.

“We have a long road ahead,” said Seidick in reference to his team getting a district berth. “We had a nice win over Pen Argyl, but we haven’t been able to finish games. We need to pick up some wins or it will be over for us.”

Seidick has been impressed with the steady improvement of junior guard Amaiya Johnson, a transfer from Bethlehem Catholic. Johnson had a season-high 17 points in her team’s win over Pen Argyl. He also noted the recent play of senior Jade Biviano.

“Amaiya (Johnson) has been developing into a very good player for us,” said Seidick. “It has been a matter of more recognition with offense. Also, it has just been a matter of time for her. She will be a major contributor for us.

“Jade Biviano has had some strong games for us and she has been a good leader.”

Seidick did cite a rash of injuries and sickness that recently has decimated his team. The Roughies have had as many as six players battling various woes in recent weeks.

Regardless, the Roughies will need to rally in the next two weeks. They will finish the week with home games against Palmerton and Salisbury.

They finished last season with an overall 9-13 mark, barley missing the district playoffs and improving six games from the previous campaign. They will face a stiff challenge to repeat that mark or better it down the stretch.

“We are still confident,” added Seidick. “We have to be able to finish games.”
