Tigers compete in Zephyr Duals

The Northwestern wrestling team got to experience a little bit of everything over the weekend at the Zephyr Duals. As one of 16 teams competing at Whitehall High School on Saturday, the Tigers faced competition that included a fellow Colonial League foe, a traditionally successful Eastern Pennsylvania Conference squad and a couple of teams from outside the Lehigh Valley area.

All in all, the Tigers put together a successful outing despite being given a tough road throughout the event.

After falling to eventual runner-up Emmaus in the opening round and then to Muncy from northern Pennsylvania, the tide started to turn for the Tigers. Northwestern picked up a win over Martin Luther King, then solidified a 13th-place finish with a 42-33 win over Northern Lehigh late in the evening.

“I liked how we did,” said Caleb Clymer. “We were missing some weights, but we wrestled hard.”

As one of the top teams coming out of the competitive Colonial League (the Tigers are 3-1 heading into this week), Northwestern may have had slightly higher expectations last weekend. But getting paired up against a tough Emmaus team and a couple of unfamiliar opponents, they can’t be disappointed with how things had played out.

“I think we came up a little short,” Clymer said. “There are still things we need to do better, and not doing the little things hurt us against Muncy.”

In their opener against Emmaus-a 54-21 defeat-Clymer was one of five Tigers to pick up victories. Clymer, who is coming off a season in which he dealt with multiple injuries, earned a 4-0 decision over the Hornets’ Reed Custer at 160 pounds.

Although he isn’t quite at 100 percent just yet, Clymer’s hip injury in 2016 isn’t as much of an issue this year.

“My hip feels good,” Clymer said. “Maybe not as good as it was, but still good. I feel good so far.

“Personally I thought I did well. I had two hard matches against Emmaus and Muncy and wrestled well.”

Harrison Bernhard, brother of recent grad Quentin Bernhard and current Tiger Jackson Bernhard, pinned Emmaus’ Jimmy Bowie for Northwestern’s first win on Saturday. Jackson picked up a decision victory as well, while Baily Wehr and Colin Rex rounded out the Tigers’ victors.

Northwestern didn’t let a second loss in as many matches let its spirit down, however. After falling to Martin Luther King later in the afternoon, the Tigers picked up wins over Muncy and then Northern Lehigh.

“What surprised me the most was the way we bounced back and nobody quit,” Clymer said. “All of the guys kept at it and continued to wrestle.”

A matchup against Bangor, unbeaten in the Colonial League, awaits on Thursday for the Tigers. That match begins at 7 p.m. at Northwestern High School.
