Clymer takes third place
Caleb Clymer was never himself on the wrestling mat last season. After dealing with a broken hip for the majority of last winter, Clymer is back to his regular self a year later and the bounce in his step is noticeable on the mats.
He was one of two Tigers to earn medals at last week’s Bethlehem Holiday Wrestling Tournament at Liberty High School.
Clymer bounced back from a 7-1 semifinal loss to Stoughton’s Tyler Dow to grab third place with a 5-0 decision over Liberty’s Anthony Emig. Teammate Baily Wehr settled for eighth place following a 4-2 loss to Brandon Connor of Wilson West Lawn.
“It’s a tough tournament and we got a lot of good matches, and that’s the goal for us coming here,” said Northwestern head coach Jim Moll. “We still have a lot to work on and I thought we could have had more guys wrestle on day two. Our goal is to always try and improve, so these guys got what we were hoping for out of this and now we just got to get back to work.”
Clymer advanced to the semifinal round of the following a 5-2 decision over Liberty’s Anthony Emig in the 160-pound quarterfinals.
Clymer jumped out to a 5-0 lead over Emig before surrendering a late-third-period takedown.
“After last year, dealing with all the setbacks and not really being able to wrestle the way I like, I’m extremely happy to be back out here,” said Clymer.
Moll is happy to have Clymer back to his old self.
“He’s healthy for starters,” Moll said. “He’s a self-motivated kid and he works hard. He’s tough and he loves competition like this going against tough kids. He’s always trying to work with the best group in our room and he’s showing what he can do.”
Northwestern finished 24th as a team out of 32 that participated in this year’s event. Northampton won, followed by Easton and Stoughton, WI, Nazareth and Central Dauphin. The top-finishing Colonial League team was Saucon Valley in eighth place. Pen Argyl finished 26th and Northern Lehigh was 31st.
