A traveling exhibit featuring the names of more than 1,000 victims killed in DUI crashes in Pennsylvania was parked at the entrance to the Lehigh Valley Hospital Dec. 1 to remind drivers of the dangers of drinking and getting behind the wheel of a vehicle.
PennDOT joined with the Pennsylvania DUI Association, Lehigh Valley Health Network, local police and highway safety partners to honor victims of impaired driving crashes by bringing the DUI moving memorial to the Lehigh Valley.
The memorial is a 30-foot trailer with the names of more than 1,000 victims of Pennsylvania DUI crashes.
At the exhibit, Salisbury Township Police Department Senior Patrol Officer Bryan Losagio told visitors approximately 1,800 people are arrested for driving under the influence in Lehigh County each year.
“That breaks down to five people each day that get behind the wheel in our area when they are impaired and end up arrested by law enforcement officers,” he said.
“DUI is an expensive and dangerous offense, and too many people, including innocent victims end up losing their lives.
“That is just an entirely unacceptable statistic that reflects the dangers of drinking and driving on Pennsylvania highways.”
With the busy holiday travel season, the traveling exhibit highlights the national “Operation Safe Holiday” enforcement mobilization by law enforcement officers across the USA.
A 30-foot trailer with a wall inscribed with the names of more than 1,000 victims of crashes in Pennsylvania involving drivers under the influence of alcohol or other substances is on display Dec. 1, at the entrance to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, as a part of PennDOT's safe holiday program.
