Board officers re-elected
At the recent annual reorganization meeting, members of Parkland School Board elected David Kennedy president and Lisa Roth vice president for the new year.
Both held the same positions in 2016.
Kennedy, who has served on the board 19 years, has a particular interest in vocational education.
He was chairman of the Lehigh Career and Technical Institute Joint Operating Committee for eight years and has done substitute teaching at vocational schools in Bethlehem, Easton and Upper Bucks.
Kennedy is retired from management positions in the printing industry.
Roth, who is active in the Community Advisory Council, has been a customer support specialist at Air Products for 31 years.
Moving forward on the agenda, the board recognized member Mark Hanichak for his eight years of service to Parkland.
He was presented a certificate adding him to the Pennsylvania School Boards Association Honor Roll of Service.
Superintendent Richard Sniscak spoke about Hanichak and his years of dedicated volunteer service to children, the community and public education.
Sniscak offered comments on the work involved for school board service.
“School directors are continually spending more of their personal time on school-related activities,” he said. “They exemplify leadership and dedication, giving unselfishly to their communities, students, and public school.
“Their efforts reflect their dedication to giving our children the opportunity to gain knowledge through the best educational system possible.”
In other business, the board approved an agreement between the school district and Spillman Farmer Architects for services related to capital improvement projects to be completed in 2017.
The work will be done at the high school; Orefield Middle School bus garage; and Fogelsville, Ironton, and Parkway Manor elementary schools.
The firm will charge a fixed fee of $79,900 plus reimbursable expenses.
The amount will be paid through the Capital Projects Fund.
