JV Roughies go unbeaten

The Catasauqua Rough Riders junior varsity football squad went undefeated in the 2016 season, amassing a 7-0 record.

“The passion and excitement these kids played with, it was real fun coaching them this season,” said head coach Phil Dorn who also coaches the Catty varsity team. “All the coaches were present for the JV games, for many of our younger kids this was their ‘Friday Night’. As their head coach, I could not be any more proud of their efforts every week, they played their games with excitement and enthusiasm, this was a real fun group to coach.”

The Rough Riders pulled in their final win of the season against the Northwestern Tigers in a close-fought battle of 21-20.

“The defense came up with a huge stop with 22 seconds left in the game to preserve the win,” exclaimed Dorn. “Probably the best part of that night was listening to the kids interact on the bus ride home and seeing the closeness they have for one another off the field. I believe that strengthens the core of any team.”

Dorn believes that the success of the season was based on a complete team effort as he looked back on some of the more note worthy games.

“Beating Notre Dame 54-42, it was fun seeing our young kids meet with so much success that night. It was a back and fourth game that we ultimately pulled away. We had major contributions from so many kids,” Dorn said.

The varsity team has hit a snag this year with a record of 2-8, but the JV players that are moving up welcome the challenge that awaits them for next year.

“Many of these kids have a great opportunity to solidify themselves as full-time starters on Friday nights, they have the talent on the field, now they have to put the work in during the off season,” explained Dorn, “Getting bigger and stronger has to be the number-one priority in order for their success to translate from JV to varsity as they move up in grade.”

Catasauqua is a small district where many kids play multiple sports. Dorn feels that it is vital for student-athletes to challenge themselves in various seasons.

“Kids have four years to compete at the high school level, I stress to my kids to enjoy that time, it will go quick,” said Dorn. “Tomorrow is not guaranteed, get involved with as much as possible. Represent your school, community, and family by embracing the title of ‘student athlete.’”
