Girls eye balance
When the Whitehall girls basketball team hits the floor this season, they’ll be looking for everyone to contribute at both ends of the court, making that their key to success this year.
Last year, the bulk of their scoring came from Taylor George on the perimeter and Ivanna Jones in the interior. This year they’ll be looking for a number of different players to put the ball in the basket.
They have some veterans returning, with senior guard Alix Buskirk leading the way. Buskirk was a starter last season and she’ll be an integral part of the Zephyr attack this season, running the team from the point.
Taylor Rummel also returns. The junior got extensive playing time last season and she’s a player who can spot up behind the arc for a three or drive to the hoop for a bucket. She’ll play both forward and guard positions this season.
Senior Kylee Cunningham is another player who’s logged a lot of varsity minutes over her career, and she’ll be a major factor in their plans to get back to the postseason. She supplies strong defense from the guard spot, an active player who generates a lot of steals.
In the post, the Zephs will count on Ariana Hines to get them points inside. She’ll also play a big role as a rebounder as the junior has plenty of experience after seeing lots of minutes last season.
They’ll also feature sophomore Olivia George who also has varsity experience. George will be another guard in their rotation this season.
Senior Mackenzie Dietz is another veteran who can give them some offense as well as leadership from the forward spot.
Head coach Dwight Repsher said that he’s encouraged with what he’s seen so far. They had a good summer at Cedar Beach and now they’ll look to build on that success.
“In terms of what we have in, and how we’re executing things, I’m encouraged,” said Repsher.
Repsher said it’s now about determining who will step up.
Repsher also said that three freshmen will have to play a role as well this season. He expects guard/forward Brianna Smith, guard Cassie Due and forward/center Grace Clary all to contribute this season.
“That’s going to be a work in progress; we’re going to have to see what those roles are, and how much playing time they see,” said Repsher, noting that they’ll also be part of the junior varsity squad as well.
He also believes they’ll be as good defensively.
Repsher, who is entering his third season, has the advantage of now coaching players who are familiar with his system.
“That’s probably why we’re further along now,” said Repsher.
The question still remains will they rebound as well this season. He said that they changed some things around to better suit their personnel.
“It’s a much different way of playing,” he said. “But I think we’re adjusting well to it, and if we shoot the ball decently, we should be as good as last year.”
The Zephs will also get plenty of help off their bench starting with juniors Cheyenne Shook, Diana Lopez and Iliana Oliver. Lopez and Oliver are both frontcout players, while Shook will see time at guard.
The girls tip off this Friday against Northwestern Lehigh at the Tiger Den.
