No tax increase for South Whitehall residents
South Whitehall residents can look forward to keeping their 2016 rate of taxation, 21.49975 mills, in the new year.
During the Nov. 16 meeting, administrators presented an overview of the 2017 fiscal plan which provides for a balanced budget with no tax increase.
The document includes $50,000 to move forward on repairs of Wehr’s Dam and $300,000 for firefighting equipment.
General fund revenue is listed at $15 million. Expenses are anticipated to be $14 million.
The difference between the two will be applied to debt payments and the budget surplus.
Business Manager Lenore Horos reported the cost for garbage and recycling will also stay the same at $70 a quarter.
She said hauler Mascaro’s contract will be extended to Dec. 31, 2019.
“We’ll have the same level of service at the same price,” Horos said.
Township Manager Howard Kutzler commended department heads for providing a responsible budget.
Board President Christina “Tori” Morgan commented on the spending plan.
“It’s a tribute to the staff and administration working together for a good solid budget,” Morgan said.
Commissioner Glenn Block commented on the affirmative vote for the Wehr’s Dam restoration.
“I am thankful the voters approved the Wehr’s Dam referendum,” Block said. “Now, this board has some direction.
“We have $50,000 set aside to go forward with the Baker plan. This is enough to start.
“The township can move this project ahead.”
Morgan added her thoughts.
“It was a subject that deserved the vote of the people,” Morgan said.
A copy of the budget document is available for public inspection at the administration building.
The vote for adoption is expected to take place at the Dec. 21 commissioners’ meeting.
