Boys made progress

Whitehall head boys’ soccer coach Adam Bastidas isn’t solely looking at his team’s final record as a true evaluation of the program.

Instead, the Zephyrs will continue to be a program in progress.

“We will continue to build the program,” said the second-year head coach. “We made some strides during the year and we stayed the course with everything. Our final record really doesn’t reflect what we have accomplished so far.”

The Zephyrs ended the year with an overall 2-16 mark in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference and a 1-15 league mark in the conference’s competitive Skyline Division. They ended the year with nine-straight defeats and their last win was Sept. 21 in a 5-0 shutout over East Stroudsburg South.

“We lost five (of eight) by one goal,” added Bastidas. “We played well against Nazareth, Emmaus, and (Allentown) Central down the stretch. We were able to do a number of good things, but we just couldn’t get the goal when we needed it.

“But we gained more confidence in ourselves as well as a team.”

The Zephyrs will lose a number of seniors led by captain Nejmi Kara, who was a center midfielder. They also will have to recover from the loss of senior goalie Bailey Luckenbill, who has been a mainstay in the nets the last few years.

“Nejmi (Kara) did a nice job for us in many ways,” said Bastidas. “He was a leader on and off the field for us. Losing (Luckenbill) will be a big loss. But we will be looking at our young guys to step it up. We believe we can fill the spots that we will lose. We had a number of guys who played tough for us this year and gained some valuable experience.”

Still, Bastidas knows there is some work left to do.

“From when I took over, we have worked very hard to develop these guys. We need to tweak some things and continue to work to totally transform a player. They need to get their technique down.”

Bastidas expects his team to put forth the extra effort in the offseason.

“We learned better how to control the ball,” noted Bastidas. “But we have to start now and continue to work during the winter. We will work to try to get these guys to play on any team out there.

“This year we learned how to compete. Next year we have to learn how to win.”

Senior captain Nejmi Kara will be a big loss for the Zephs next season.
